    Cool New Member

Went to Montego Bay for the first time this past April/May. What a great experience. Arriving this Thursday to Couples Swept Away and was wondering if anyone had any pointers? We haven't been to Negril before and aren't into the big "touristy" type stuff. Love the beach and hanging out. Is the Pub Crawl worth the experience and how long is the tour? How about Mayfield Falls, is it an all day affair for the tour? Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated.

    Thanks

Greeting & welcome to the board ..
Although I've never been to Mayfield Falls ...I have been to YS & the Pelican Bar ..Yes, this tour is a all day affair ..hook up with others @ Couples ..if you want to get a good package deal..for a private tour ..as far as the Pub Crawl is concerned ..some like it & others not so much ..we usually do our pwn ..starting @ Canoe & working our way out to the lighthouse .. & usually end @ Sir D's for sunset ..stop have a drink ,grab some chow, explore the places along the way .. go for a swim ..work @ your own pace ..if you want grab a cab ..hit the road before flagging a cab .. if you take any tour or cab ..straight out of Couples ..you'll be charged ..

Mayfield is much closer than YS, you can do Mayfield in a half day if you leave in the morning. I've never done the pub crawl, so no idea there.

Read some old threads here, lots of good info to be found.

Negril is a whole different ball game than MoBay, for the better. Yes, you will have a great time on the Pub Crawl. You will get to see the cliffs and meet some new people. Usually Lembert will pick you up at your hotel around 2pm and be back between 5-6. Call or email him for a reservation. You can find his info under things to do at the top of this page. I highly recommend a trip to Mayfield Falls. It may be the highlight of your trip. Be sure to take water shoes with you. There are several drivers who will get you there. I always use Patrick at Esparanza Tours. You can find him above as well in the transport section. Have a driver take you out to Half Moon Beach for a 1/2 day. Only about a 15 minute drive from Negril. Go up to Catcha Falling star for the sunset and dinner at Ivan's. Great food and atmosphere. http://www.catchajamaica.com/. While on the cliffs, stop in at Whoopies for a fresh squeezed OJ and rum. Great place to just chill. You must have lobster or chicken at 3 Dives. My advise, no need to stop at Ricks Café. Expensive drinks and very touristy. Have a great time and I am sure you will get more advise from the rest of the boardies here. Welcome to the boards.

Although many will reply with suggestions, the above advice is excellent.

The best part of Negril is that it is mostly (with the exception of all inclusives) small hotels with facilities that can be enjoyed by someone having a drink or lunch or just stopping by. Up on the cliffs go to Ixtabi to go snorkeling and jump off the cliff....Pee wee's bar for a drink, catcha falling star for dinner or drinks after 5 pm. on the beach just stop by and say hi to those in the bar or restaurant. Mayfields is just a half day....as is YS falls if you don't do Pelican bar.... the Blue hole is a couple of hours...... go snorkeling in one of the glass bottom boats....Famous Vincent is the best he will really take care of you. There is live reggae every night at one or the other bars/ hotels...IE: Alfreds Tues, Fri, Sun, Drifters on Wed, Thurs, Fri &I Sunday afternoon/eve....bourbon Beach every night....Sea Star for Sat nights with free shuttle.......So bottom line is use all of Negril instead of just your hotel and have fun!!

You will surely love Negril if you get out of your resort and explore. To many people stay at the large AI's and never step foot outside the gates of the property. There are many people here who have been many times and have a wealth of info to share and will always help as well as promote the places they love. We all have our favourite places to hang out, eat and drink and best advice to you would be to listen and consider what you hear from the people of this board. Check out some of the places boardies tell you about and suggest and also maybe try out some you haven't heard about on here and maybe you will find a few of your own favourite places that one day you can recommend to others. There are so many places to chill at and enjoy in Negril and even if you spent a month or more you would never have the time to check them all out. Just remember to use common sense and not do anything you wouldn't do at home. The people of Negril and surrounding areas are truly wonderful and I am sure you will want to go back again and again like most of the people who post on this board. It's been 7 long years for us and our trip to Negril can't come soon enough. Hope you have a wonderful vacation in paradise.

You gotta stop by Rick's and Margaritaville just to have the experience. You don't have to drink at Rick's to watch the divers. Sometimes the best times are just to sit back and observe all the goings on! We love it there (Negril as a whole) and it is our preferred vacation destination. Once you go you know!
