    Reflections on the Trip

This was probably the worst weather that we’ve had on any of our February trips, but it did not matter, we still had a great time and actually got plenty of sun. We didn’t get in much floating time in the sea though, and I missed that. Body surfing is fine, but nothing beats just floating there bobbing up and down in the sea without a care in the world.

One of our most favorite things about Negril is the wide variety of “characters” that we meet, both locals and tourists. Speaking of tourists, it is amazing the number of people that we see each year (we tend to go the same week each year) that are repeat guests. We’ve met a lot of folks this way, and from the looks of it, we have many more to meet.

I’m very jealous of those that get extended stays, be it weeks, or months. We are still about 15 years away from retirement, but as soon as we retire, we will be ready for some trips that last several weeks or even a couple of months. Gotta have something to look forward to.

Being down there around Super Bowl time cracks me up because of the number of times I see establishments using the Super Bowl and the NFL logo. In the states, bars are restaurants have to promote their parties by calling it the Big Game, or something like that. In Jamaica that stuff doesn’t matter. I guess the NFL doesn’t send any of their “branding police” to Jamaica to stop this kind of stuff. It is kind of refreshing.

Seeing those families and particularly the little kids playing in the surf on Ash Wednesday was one of the highlights of the trip.

I don’t want to start any political debates, but from an outsiders point of view, it certainly seems like Negril improved quite a bit under the PNP (the sidewalk, the tourism police, the general cleanliness of the place, particularly the grass on the side of the roads coming into Negril from Orange Bay, etc) and I hope it continues to improve under the JLP now that they have taken the reins (or will tomorrow anyway).

I’m glad we discovered a couple of new places this trip. We have our favorites for sure (Canoe, Chicken Lavish, 3 Dives, Red Dragon, Catcha, etc) but it is nice to branch out and try new places. After all, we had our first trip to all of our favorite places a long time ago, so they were all new once too.

It is nice to see music drawing people together at various times, whether it be Boat Bar or Drifters during the day, or Alfreds and Bourbon Beach at night. To me, music is a huge part of the Negril/Jamaican experience and I like the fact that it appears to be everywhere and appeals to a lot of different people.

I’ve said this once, I’ve said it 1000 times, you can get a beach that is pretty nice in a lot of places, but you can only get the Jamaican people in Jamaica and they are the biggest reason we keep coming back. From our very first trip back in 1993 to now, we continue to meet Jamaicans that capture our hearts and our interest. Slow down, and get to meet the people of Jamaica, you will be glad you did.

Already looking forward to October and next February so we can do it all again.

Thanks for taking the time to read my report. I actually ended up enjoying writing it. It made me think a little deeper about the trip and posting each day allowed me to relive it as I was typing.
