I am not sure about US regulations but for Canada any wooden item brought back into the country must be inspected by Customs for bugs like wood lice and those not visible to the naked eye. etc. The newer the wood, the more likely an item is to be contaminated. Always a risk of having items confiscated. Bring back Sangsters Rum Cream! lol The smaller gift bottles at the airport duty free works out to be same price as if you bought a large bottle. Then you can reluctantly give one to your mother-in-law. They will roll all the bottles and wrap them for you at airport. Oops. Don't wrap the last one. Save it for the plane! China Man price good too for those little brown bottle treasures.
