Who Wants a Generator for after the Hurricane???

Is There anybody in Negril that wants / needs a generator (s) to survive and rebuild after Matthew leaves. You all know the realities of the situation. Assuming that the airports don't mashup for too long it might make perfect sense to have generators brought in during an emergency for this and future happenings. I live on the East Coast of the USA between Boston and NYC. I have 4 generators for personal use specifically for my own properties and when I can to help less fortunate neighbors get through.

911 Responders couldn't get through last time but I mobilized and was able to donate 10 generators in New York and New Jersey areas. I delivered them, taught them how to use them correctly, and felt good about my contribution to my brothers and sisters .

I am willing to help anybody in need in Negril if this storm proves devastating. I can buy the generators as closely as possible and fly it down to MoBay assuming flights are flying and that somebody at Customs like me enough to let me through. For me if the costs of the generator and flight accommodation and food are paid I do not expect any payment over and above that. This can't wait long so if its something you are interested in we have to get moving. I had a few prior to Hurricane Sandy, needed them to run the house, as I work from home.

After Sandy, we got a 20 kWh system which is connected to the gas line.... And the power has ot gone out since. I gave one of our generators to a friend, but the others are sitting in the shed, probably with seized up engines by now.

Thanks for the offer, JohnG...but it would probably be simpler to buy a generator here in Jamaica. Easy to get one in Negril.

Bnewb, Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know there was an abundance of generators in Negril but I guess considering the frequency of tropical storms in JA people have gotten themselves in a ready for anything position.

I have had a great deal of luck with the Champion brand of generators, a very reliable and inexpensive line. In my home with have a freezer that my wife stocks with frozen foods especially meats that if we lose power for more than a few hours would mean losing upward of a $1,000 bucks. I am sure anybody in Negril losing power without a generator would be faced with similar problems especially a small hotel or a guest house or a private residence.

During Hurricane Sandy the East Coast of the US around New Jersey and Long Island, NYC got hit really bad.

I have no idea if and when MoBay airport will reopen if you get hit hard. Reports here are unclear about whether Jamaica is going to be hit really bad so perhaps nobody loses power. If things turn ugly Miami will most likely be a target too so getting supplies from there will be unlikely.

Not knowing if the airlines that service JA from the NYC area would be willing to help getting generators down would be their call. My time would be volunteer so I am not looking to do anything but help.

Yeah JohnG...pretty easy to get here now...you can even find generators at the grocery store Quality Traders aka the Green Store...located near the HiLo.
It was pretty funny/interesting watching everyone at the Red Dragon yesterday getting the generator up and running...too many cooks in the kitchen...lol.

Bnewb, out of curiosity how expensive is a 5000 continuous running watts unit cost?? You can buy a new unit here for about $500 USD for 5000 watt unit. Do they have units that run on propane?? Here where I live the big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Cabelas, all run out of inventory as soon as a storm comes up the Eastern Seaboard. As soon as the TV weatherman mentions a hurricane headed our way everybody panics.

What do you have personally for backup if you lose power??

JohnG...There are many brands available but since you mentioned Champion....below is the approx. pricing here in Jamaica...
Champion 7500w $850us and a Champion 3800w duel fuel $570.

We don't have anything for backup...no need!
Only important appliance would be the fridge....which would be a waste to power with a generator...cooler and ice much cheaper for us.

Bnewb, Wow I had no idea that you can buy one for that low a price. Things have really changed. If you ever need one Champion is a great brand (bang for your buck) and deal. Those prices are about the same as in the US. And yes in JA you probably don't load up on frozen food like we do here. Lucky for you no furnace necessary!!! Those who have been thru this before have plenty of gas cans to stock up. A 5000w generator will run 8-9 hours at half load, so one needs to load up on gas. You can run for a few hours to get the fridge nice and cold and than turn it off for a few hours, so 5 gals a day is doable. Most places can get by easily with a smaller generator such as a 4000w. This will power a fridge start up as well as keep the fans and lights on.
