On Thursday night, while taking the dog for its late night final walk, I happened to glance up at the moon. There was a beautiful halo around the moon. A line of clouds were approaching fast from the northwest so we both had to hurry to get the camera to capture this unusual halo surrounding the nearly full moon. Getting the dog to hurry was a bit of an unfair chore, but the camera did its magic and caught most of what was a perfectly complete moon shown in the picture below.
Moon halos are caused by both refraction and reflection from the tiny ice crystals in the clouds, and as the saying goes, "ring around the moon means rain soon". We did get some rain that evening, but the cloud cover has been too thick to have a repeat of another of nature's majesty at work.
So when in Negril, besides looking at our gorgeous sunsets at dusk, at night look up and take in the view above you! The Milky Way is incredible and you may happen to catch a moon halo! Enjoy!
