Fishing contest. First annual! Tensing Pen.
Our traveling buddy brought poles, line, etc to make an impromptu fishing contest for the staff and guests. Good turnout... included a four year old fishing prodigy (she was in the lead at one point), some guests and a few staff that fish off the cliffs a few times each week.
Grand prizes were available, $1000j for the most fish and $1000j for the biggest fish... and bragging rights.
We decided to have some fun with the whole thing, and went to the fish market behind the craft market first thing in the morning. Picked up a tuna (7 pounds?) and brought it back to the resort. Purchasing the fish was entertaining.. over the years, I've gotten to where the accents on the island are not really hard for me to understand as they once were, and I caught the $1500j price offered by the fisherman to my friend who countered with $20us 😅.
Anyway, we got the cab back, and put the fish in the fridge, probably out about $40 for the whole expedition (we also put up the "massive" prize money).
Ok, so fast forward to the event. Tim had tied the fish to a line and had him in the water, switching out after a few small fry fish were caught. Pulling it up, he was going... "I've got one, I've got one!" Oohs and ahhs were provided all around, and many congratulations.
As he posed for his obligatory fishermans phot with his catch, Mikey (one of the long time staff here) was peering at the fish and feeling it. He had a suspicious look on his face.
Possibly one of the best lines I have heard this week (second only to Connie telling us we were plate thieves and her subsequent proposal) was: "That's a dead tuna, Mon! That tuna is not alive!" The line is much better with a Jamaican accent, but you get the point.
I'm not sure we will get away with this next year, and there may be people looking out to make sure no similar chicanery is pulled.
Niney, one of the really long time staff members actually ended up winning the whole contest, the tuna was divided among a few staff and apparently quite tasty from all reports.
