Re: Men shot dead at Negril hairdressing parlour

I can't help but think of the old saying, ignorance is bliss.

I was completely ignorant up until my trip in June when I had a little run in on the beach road. All turned out ok, but to say I was shaken is a misstatement. It completely changed my perspective. Until that moment, however, I would have told anyone there is nothing to worry about... I have a different perspective now and really encourage visitors to take great care in their business... even when you mind your own, someone may have other plans. I will never walk the beach road at night again- mind you, it was only about 7pm when I had my run in.

It is totally tragic that people are losing their lives, but as stated many times, it's all planned - so these people are in some kind of bad business or are non-compliant with someone's demands. But we also know, you can be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and for that... there is no recourse. As an example, recently a visitor from the 603 had just gotten out of a taxi bus and another car slammed into the bus, which slammed into the man and he died. While not a bullet, one never knows when and where they will meet their maker. We must be vigilant at all times.

And frankly, if you don't like Negril, go somewhere else.. no one is stopping you! I am going one more time in April. After that, I will seriously consider where I want to visit next. It may be Negril again, it may be elsewhere.

ETA: I follow loop Jamaica on Facebook... they report a murder or something about a murder suspect every day, sometimes multiple times a day. i don't know how reputable the source is, but to me, I'd triple check any info I get from a Facebook page!

Judging from the confirmations from those in Negril ( Rob, Marko, etal ), I'd say that the source was pretty reliable.

FYI the link came from a Google news alert.

The link in the first post begins as loopjamaica.com, which is what I was referring to. I saw the same report on Facebook through loop Jamaica. Sorry to offend, but it's one in the same to me.

there is so much we don't know. And loop Jamaica reports a lot of crime based incidents. While I appreciate everyone's first hand perspective, each has their own bias. Let's be real here. I am not discounting any person or their point of view, rather, as I've been reminded of first hand, as with any incident, there are multiple points of view and always, the first release of news is often incorrect or incomplete.

I absolutely agree that people should be able to make informed decisions about where they vacation, but there is literally, a report every day about a shooting, a knife attack, children, women, killers, passerbys, people getting murdered.... so it strikes me funny when one incident flares a response. It happens every day. And I am the first to say I had my own strong reaction a few weeks ago. I am frustrated, like so many of us. But when I think about the big picture, is it me who suffers, or the people who have no choice but to live in this communitnies....

Sounds like the nearly 100% increase in murders around Westmoreland has prompted a Peace Conference.

Hopefully it helps this very sad situation!

Rob , thanks for clearing up the details , and I apologize for any misinformation , however the fact remains the same , wrong place wrong time , as you yourself have said . My point is exactly that .. take the place out of the equation and no worries about the time . I'm sure you know all the facts regarding the ouster of the USA's puppet leader Bautista in Cuba , hence most Americans ignorance of Cuba in general . To place an embargo on Cuba yet swing the doors wide open for China seems hypocritical in my view . Both military dictatorships , no ? Breaking the law of/in any country has it's own repercussions . It is a travellers obligation to know the rules of the country they are in . Guns and drugs are a HUGE no-no in Cuba , most folks (Canadians-Europeans) would take comfort in this fact .
I regress .. but I stick to my survey .. where would you drop off your 16 yr old child .. Haiti - Dominican - Jamaica - Mexico or Cuba ? nuff said
Merry Christmas to all , and to all a good night . Travel safe mi friends .

I think it is unconscionable to "drop off your 16 yr old child" ANYWHERE! The premise is ridiculous and I hope you enjoy Cuba on future vacations. More than "nuff said". Chooo!
