Hi! I meant to go to more shows than one but only wound up going to see Luciano on Friday. When I say "only" this is strictly in terms of number of shows seen as Luciano was as amazing as I've known he would be since my first introduction to him booming out of the sound system between live acts singing "Sweep Over My Soul" at my first and only previous MXIII show about 12 years ago now. We were only a couple bodies deep from the stage when he bounded on to it singing "Messenger" at about midnight backed by a hot local band, and what a thrilling and engaging presence is the man! Preceding him were the Nyabinghi Allstar Drummers who began their act with some very focused and talented youthful drummers and slowly evolved to seriously world class adult drummers who were ridiculously talented and kept us in awe of their virtuosity. Between acts were an acoustic duo of guys from Luciano's backing band who were very good but toward the end lost a bit of the momentum the drummers had whipped up. Following was Luciano's full backing band who warmed the crowd up for Luciano, who, again, was magnificent. I did wonder why all the acts performed on a rather small, makeshift stage rather than use the huge stage which sat maybe 20 yards behind it, but the sound quality and vibe didn't suffer from the difference. I would have gone out to see Toots Hibbert on the 6th but we'd partied a little too hard that day (it happens) to do that what with our plans with kindly Steve Positive for a trip to Peter Tosh's tomb and YS Falls the next morning. But there's my review. Did I do OK? I will add one important thing--MXIII shows are for Jamaicans AND tourists, and tourists you have nothing to fear about going out to them as the vibe is peaceful and inclusive--in fact the only thing to fear about such a night out is not going as you will miss out on a truly thrilling and memorable Negril, JA experience! So hail a cab with red plates and GO! Ernie, back in cold New Hampshire.
