Bread is not good for fish. Bread contains yeast and when eaten by fish, it will expand and can cause constipation for most fish. The most resilient fish will survive however others will disappear as they suffer and the predators take them.

Hey Rob, You might have your first paragraph in quotes as you lifted most of it from an article on oceancrusaders.com. Knowledge is power, and respect for original authorship is a good thing, too.

But next time I snorkeling I think I'll skip the bread, for sure.

Yes, I found this info OceanCrusaders.org, not oceancrusaders.com (link below). And I took them at their word in the final sentence:

"So if you see someone feeding bread to fish, please so us all a favour and ask them to stop doing it. Even better explain why."

I explained why as they asked.

They didn't ask for credit, just that the info gets out there to protect the fish. That is admirable and there is no copyright on the site, but I do admit my error in not crediting them as the source. Here is the full link. It is about the Great Barrier Reef, but the same guide goes for all "fish" destinations.

Thanks to Rob and TAH for bringing up the harm that bread can do. I would prefer that people don't feed the fish at all because that trains them to look to humans for their food rather than foraging as they naturally should. I have always seen plenty without feeding the fish.

I keep wondering what happened to "Take only photographs, leave only footprints".
