A trip to get Spices in Sav
Many moons ago, I took a trip to Sav with
my driver Nick.
He had to pick up some tings, so I tagged along.
Last year I went with a lady friend in a route Taxi.
She went in and out of about 20 different stores.
We got out in Sav in a parking lot, went down a street,
turned left, cut through the gas station, pass the Court House and Police Station,
then down another street.
Needless to say, she had me turned around more than a spinning top.
Never the less, I thought this trip I would give the trip a try Solo.
So, with a shower and after a big breakfast, I walked out to the road.
Said no to about 2-3 of my regular drivers that wait there.
I flagged down a route mobile and took it all the way,
up the road,
pass the Round-a Bout, down the street and into the Taxi Stand Park.
All of the drivers, there is at least 40 cars there waiting their turn,
shouting out their Routes
ORANGE BAY!!
BEACH!!!
SHEFFIELD!!
LUCEA!!
SAV LA MARR!!!.......Ding, that's me!
I walked over, but someone had beat me to the front seat.
So, I hopped in the back and waited.
Here came a nice lady, then a gent.
Soon, we pulled out.
The Driver waving out the window,
Yelling "SAV!!, SAV!!
still trying to get one more fare.
Soon, we were barreling down the road, Windows wide open and the sun shining.
Shot through Sheffield,
ran down the main street through Little London,
Pass all kinds of stores and homes.
The one woman got out, but 2 more ladies with kids got in.
They were darling little boys and girls,
sitting on their mom's lap.
"Going to Sav to shop? I asked.
Oh, yes, they said.
"I'm goin to the Spice market, do you know where that is?" I asked
The ladies looked a little puzzled, then said
"it is Downtown"
We were getting close and people started to get out.
"Hey Driver, do you know where that place is to get spices?
"Last time I went, it was someplace off the mani street,
my friend and I made a left pass the Police Station, I think???
"Easy Spice Mon, It's on the main street, NO turns.
No, no, not Easy Spice....It's some other place, like in a Market,
Off of the main drag.
He thought, and thought, but could not come up with it.
Mon, Easy Spice...It has all the spices you want....It's right up there.
Ok, take me.
We went all the way to the end of the main street downtown.
I was looking out the window, trying to remember a landmark from before.
No such luck.
As we drove, it looked like we were leaving the Main street out of Sav.
I was wondering where the H--- is he taking me.
It turns out at the end of the Main street is a turn around, so
drivers can head back the way they came.
East Spice is right there, at the end.
I walked in and the scents of spice just hit my nose.
There were shelves and shelves full of all kinds of spices.
No one else happened to be in the store when I got there.
I said "Man, I need Jerk.
He showed me the different sizes he had.
Then folks started to come in behind me.
I was looking around and saw his assortment.
Man, give me, Jerk, chicken, Pork, Fish,
2 of that size, 3 of those little fish bags,
2 more chicken. 2 big bags of Jerk,
A couple Pork.
He had them all lined up on the counter.
He pulled out a roll of masking tape, pulled off a little
and put a little on each bag,
and wrote the name of the Spice on the tape.
Nice I thought.
I ended up with a big o bag of stuff.
I paid the man, then walked out and down the street, Back the way the driver brought me.
I stopped along the way and did some nice people watching.
Sav is a great place for that.
It was hot, but I stayed cool.
Soon, I saw an empty Taxi the said "Negril" on its side.
I waved him down and hopped in.
He picked up folks along the way and we headed back to Negril.
It was a good day.

Re: A trip to get Spices in Sav
Trips to sav are the easiest route taxi experience. Like you say they are calling out their destinations and once there sav is one long main street so there is no reason to leave it. when headed back to negril everyone knows where the white man is headed. less then 3 bucks each way. just remember i think sav is the HOTTEST place in jamaica. have fun it is really easy
