I've had the same SIM going on close to 10 years now without any trouble. I've gone over 6 months without using it a few times and never had it cancelled.
If either of your phones are unlocked you can get a digical SIM for about $5 (but remember to bring a piece of ID when you go to purchase it or they might not see you one).
If your phone isn't unlocked I would advise getting it unlocked before you go (it is more expensive to get it unlocked there but if you get suck there is a shop upstairs from digicel that can do it - or used to) OR you can buy a simple phone for about $30 when you get there.

You can put an international plan on your phone to make calls 300JMD for 150 minutes, 1000JMD for 660 minutes, 1250JMD for 830 minutes, 1500JMD for 1000 minutes.

An agent at the digicel store will be able to set an international plan up for you.

I haven't used Flow before but it has similar plans. 250JM for 90 minutes, 900JMD for 600 minutes, 1200JMD for 800 minutes

As long as your phone is unlocked you can enjoy any sim, the costs are not much and 3G reception is also good here.
