never understood exactly why Jamaicans seemed to want to hold their boots to someones neck in their dealings with each other.
societal fallout from Colonialism...... when the disenfranchised rise above previous circumstances, they will adopt the same 'power' behavior as the prior colonial oppressors; a developing society cannot help but take on some of the same behavior that was modeled over previous generations, including the 'power structure' behavior of the colonialist society.

For some people, as soon as they get a "little" personal self-confidence & personal sense of power, they wield it mercilessly above anyone they perceive to be "less than".....because they can. there are some people for whom making someone else small, is what makes them feel big -- that's already universal across human behavior, and it's made even worse when the 'bully mentality' of colonialism is part of the history of the society in which they live - because it's seemingly 'validated' by that history, as the correct way to be.

You said that much better than I could have ever hoped to , Miss Blue. It took me several years of living here & really "studying" the culture to understand that.

yah it's taken me a long time studying human behavior, combined with studying & observing post-colonial history, to realize it too -

IMO....I've had these philosophical thoughts to myself many times while driving through Jamaica......the way I see it, the landscape of Jamaica is so beautiful........ just breaktaking...but then there such roughness on other things......I asked myself many times, how can beauty coexist with struggle…but it does, everywhere, not just JA…..Most of my family and friends have never traveled to Jamaica, there thoughts and experience of Jamaica is based on the beautiful pictures/commercial etc. they see...they do not think of Jamaica as having struggle, but as beauty…..but we know, whether we’re born/raised there, live there or have become regular guest of Jamaica, we know there’s more to it than the beauty of its landscape….I’ve used the wording “it’s not what it seems” when describing Jamaica, not in a bad way, but to let people know it’s not all about what it looks like, but also what’s in it as well…..

Me too, which is why I added LOL preceeding the statement.
Darn, try to get a cup of coffee in a place with one of the world's best coffee beans
An island surrounded by water but it's common to hear, fish nah walk, mi nah swim

Me thinks it means, it would SEEMS that it would be natural for something to happen but in reality it's NOT, therefore not what it seems. Pff, no one explained it to me, it was just known!

your "seems" would be based on an assumption that would be purely relevant to your own opinion of what SHOULD be happening but what isn't. Yes ? In that case your statement rings true for yourself and for anyone else that had preconcieved notions of what should be happening and found it wasn't.

Andre drinks about 5 cups of coffee a day I never once saw him have any issues finding a cup lol Oh and he can't swim lol

I was taking it with a GRAIN of salt... your original comment gave the impression that there was a deeper understanding that I wanted to understand along with you .. that is all.

On point manda. everyone's 'seems' is through their own filter of expectation of 'what should be'.

That background therefore dictates the nature of the reaction to 'what actually is'.
