Did this on my 2nd circumnavigation of the island in the early '90s. Somewhat ballsy, but as long as you know what resorts are where you're going it didn't present a problem in the off season. We burned a few hours looking for the right value, but weren't disappointed for the most part and fabulously exceeded our expectations at one resort (Dragon Bay Villas in Port Antonio).
