The only real rule is DO NOT change it at the airport! Everywhere else is close...
Negril.com - For the vacation that never ends!
What gets me is how many times I walk past one of those airport exchanges and see nobody except the people behind the counter and wonder how the heck do they stay in biz. I reckon its a low volume, high profit biz.
I typically ask the hotel desk if they can exchange some US$ into J$ and give them a day or two to get it done. Most will hook ya up on their next bank run. You'll get a fair exchange rate. Easier than cabbing it into to town and hitting an atm.
Nothing like a 25 % hit at the airport to start your trip on the exchange rate..lol
Bring a debit card - you will get the best exchange rate from ATMs. There are several ATMs outside the airport exit where the taxis are. We've started keeping our "excess" J's for our next trip. For safety, I have an account with a bank that refunds ATM fees which I only use for travel. If the account is hacked, only a limited amount of money is at risk. We do use credit cards for hotel bills, and occasionally at places like Times Square or larger supermarkets, or the more expensive restaurants where we treat ourselves once or twice a trip.
qwerty made me think of something too... When I need to bring my debit card, I call the bank and ask them to set the daily limit to a lower than normal amount (it's already pretty low because I did have some trouble in the US). I also have an app that allows me to turn my card "on" and "off". It's always "off" unless I need to make a purchase. If I need to, I'll use a credit card with a higher limit for emergency purchases, but knock on wood!!!!!!
I'm gonna be Iron like a Lion in Zion
Huh, I did exactly the opposite - had my credit union RAISE my daily limit. The app is an interesting idea, but my credit union doesn't have that.
