The barrel guy in front of Alfred's this past August was either really good, or I had a serious case of the munchies. There's a good chance it was both.

Hey JohnNYC,
I feel ya Brother.
Sometimes, just get a beer and start walking.
Nope, not enough smoke coming out of that one.
Nope, I can't smell it 20 feet away.
and then......all of a sudden, there it is!
A Cloud!
then some guy, with a long fork in his hand steps out of the cloud.
Then that cloud hits you.
Around my hotel there are Barrel guys every 1/2 block most nights.
Once a guy was trying to pull me over to his grill, but
I noticed a very big cloud erupt across the street from a barrel
when the cook opened it.
The wind was blowing my way and it hit me.
With beer in hand I floated across the road.
He lifted the top again, I pointed to a nice Juicy piece.
He stabbed it,....
and the rest is history.
MS,
I cold smell, and almost taste it reading your post!
First time we had chicken in Negril, we were staying above the HiLo, just before the bridge headed back from the beach we were walking along. There was a guy off the road 20 or 30 feet, just standing there in front of a smoking 45 gallon drum BBQ. The smell made us stop, he looked up and said "It's OK, don't be afraid". We walked over and he opened the grill, we would have paid whatever he asked. We got a half chicken and two ice cold stripes out of a cooler under the grill for 12 bucks. We ate most of it on the walk back to the HiLo. We got to our room and laughed, BBQ sauce everywhere greasy bottles, have been in love with the road side dudes ever since.
