Gilbert arrived back in the pre-concrete times. The damage was pretty much complete. Nothing wooden was spared.

You could stand on the beach and see the base of the mountain beyond the Great Morass. You could not even see where the road was, covered by so much debris.

When Jamaica rebuilt, many wooden structures were replaced by concrete ones

They used to(maybe still do) refer to Jamaica as before Gilbert and after. It was devastating, but yet they rebuilt and survived. I spoke with many residents who lived through Gilbert and for some it was truly a terrifying experience.

Yes, everyone was terrified. We all had the same experience. Gilbert cut a line across the island from Kingston to the the Negril beach. The eye passed right over head and the sound of the wind was truly indescribable.

And for those of us who experienced it, it will always be known as before Gilbert and after Gilbert...

we came down right after Gilbert, helped in clean up...it was a mess...but the people kept up with great attitudes......
"One of the laundry gals pipes up ,,"LOOK AT DA BLOOD"
"YES,THAT WOULD BE MINE" I said as my leg that at first gave no pain, started dishing it out in large bunches........"

That says a lot about someone, both the locals who made the impression, and you who reacted to it. Much respect!!

The morning of Gilbert, all we heard last on the radio was, "Kingston's been destr....." and then the radio went dead. We were completely on our own....
