    You can have eggs without a rooster, we do. Just no fertile eggs that would hatch. Roosters protect the flock and have different calls for many uses. Warnings of danger, keeping other roosters at bay and just plain old messaging. Chickens are dumb and roosters keep things running smoothly.
    Traditionally brown stew was for the old roosters and old egg layers that are tough and stringy. Fried and other types of fast cooking would be young chickens of both sexes.
