Easy way to help our communities...

Everyone is so wonderful asking the best ways to help/give back to Jamaica...to avoid the baggage fees of travel or the worry about bringing the correct items etc...there are a couple of highly respected charities in Negril that do great things. Your monetary donations are always welcome and provide great benefit.

Someone had told me about Mary Gate Of Heaven, so I am bringing down some infant and toddler clothing from our business to give to them.

I used to bring down reading glasses. I wonder if they would like those also?

We brought a bunch of reading glasses to donate a couple years ago and they seemed very happy to get them

St Anthony's has a great little thrift shop at the kitchen. I'm sure they can use clothing donations for all ages. They also had out cash to the middle/high school kids who have to take taxis to school, so cash donations are really important to the program. I've helped serve lunch in the past, which was a wonderful experience.

I have made cash donations to NEET and the Rockhouse Foundation in person at various events, too. I'm interested to learn more about those programs and perhaps do some kind of service while in town next spring.

It feels good giving back while also on vacation!

For an overview of the Mary Gate of Heaven outreach programs, see

For information about making a donation to the Get Kids to School program, or sponsoring a child on an ongoing basis, see

For those who itemize deductions, you can make these donations through stanthony.org in the US and get a regular receipt.

Do you have any information on volunteering to help with their breakfast or lunch outreach?

No, sorry, I've just done the Get Kids to School donation, but I'm sure someone who has volunteered will see this and respond.

Lisa, thanks for posting this about supporting local programs. I began assisting the NEET program October 2017. My goal was to provide 100 Amazon Fire 7 tablets by 12/31/18. Due to the generosity of others, we donated 75 tablets to support their education program. While we fell short of the 100 tablets goal, it felt good to know that we supported at least 75 youth, ages 8-14, who participate in this program. One requirement for the youth is to also perform community service, which I witnessed as they planted trees in the morass.

    Peace and blessings,
    Dr. J

When I come next week I will be bringing some toddler/ infant clothing, maybe around 20 pairs of reading glasses and some school supplies. If asked at customs about these things is there something specific that I need to say, or is it not a problem if the value of the goods are not over some specific dollar amount? Thank you.
