Yes, lets warn the boats. It is true swimmers can be snorkeling and not pay attention if they get outside the ropes, but they shouldn't have to worry if they do, to get whacked by a boat. Also, I assume Alfred's puts their dock out to swim to, and that is way beyond the roped area. I use to love to swim out there butwon't anymore. John's idea is great, a buffer zone. These boats are getting to close for advertisement .

Before most of the hotels put in swim area zones there used to be red and white buoys that nobody paid any attention to whatsoever. We used to swim far beyond Alfred's dock. Get out 100 to 200 yards offshore and we'd find sandbars that you could stand on. We used the Alfred's dock as a resting point on the way out and back.

John NYC, by "experienced... boat captains" does that include the one that drove over the very obvious swim line and got us caught up on it a few weeks ago when we took some visitors out for a tour?

I do agree with both parties giving plenty of space and being vigilant. Accidents happen regardless of experience.
