    Back to school costs

How much does it cost to purchase items required for the new school year for all ages school? This would include uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and anything else the parents are asked to provide for their child.

are you looking to purchase in canada and bring to jamaica or are you inquiring about what these items would cost if you had to buy them in jamaica?

if it's the former, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what a backpack and basic school supplies cost in canada, and i'm assuming there are stores that sell a wide variety of school uniforms in winnipeg- all you need to know is what colors the uniform needs to be (dark blue skirt/yellow shirt? grey pants/light blue shirt? etc.). the shoes are most likely regular black oxfords or all black sneakers, so those should be easy to price out.

my sister in law sometimes comes to brooklyn before school (in port au prince) starts and i take her to a store called cookies to get my niece and nephew their uniforms (including shoes).

post a shopping list and let us know if you're looking for advice on shopping in canada or if you want to price this out for purchase in ja and maybe we can help you.

There is an article in the Gleaner today about the school fees.

Here in Canada I just spent over $200 on my 3 grand sons. All I got was 3 back packs, 3 lunch kits, 6 three ring binders, paper, 2 calculators and 3 locks. No clothes etc. So if buying here you will find it more expensive than the US or Jamaica.

Thanks for replying to my question on school supplies. To clarify, I am looking for the overall cost for items purchased in Jamaica. This would include uniform, shoes, backpack, water bottle, books, scribbles, pencils, or anything the children would need to start off the school year. It would not include transportation or costs for lunches.

Sorry, I can't break it down to specifics for you, Jahlove...but the total cost (lunch & transportation not incl.) and of course, depending on whether the children are in primary or high school...the cost will be anywhere from 10,000j to 20,000j. This will also differ between each school and more specifically each high school.

Your figures are pretty much in line with what I pay each school year to put two children through school. The one in Basic School costs me about $100 US and the one going to High School about $150 US. That gets them started each year and allows my friends a little space to save some money for the incidentals that always come up. It seems that the time when the money is needed is always in the middle between crop yields.

Another option to consider is supporting Father Jim's Get Kids to School program at St. Mary's. You can make either a one-time or a recurring donation through http://stanthony.org. Choose "Missions" and write in "Jamaica - Get Kids To School". Doing so this way means that someone in Negril is seeing that any money you send actually pays for school needs. If you want to support specific kids, add their names to your donation and tell them to sign up at St. Mary's. I started making a monthly donation last year when I was requested to pay for school for a couple of kids but was not comfortable simply handing over a significant amount of money to the family. The estimated amount for a full year per child is on the order of $600., right in line with Cap's JMD 80,000.
