    Negril Palms-guard dog

    Just a friendly heads up.

We were out for a walk the other night after dark and walked on the beach past Negril Palms. There were 2 guards stationed on the beach closer to the water's edge. One guard was sitting on a chair and the other was standing but there was a very large pitbull with them. We passed by about 15 feet away when the dog began growling and lunging. The handler guard had a hard time controlling the dog and although the dog hadn't gone in to full on aggressive behaviour I did note that this is a potentially dangerous situation.

This was a first for us seeing guards posted at the water's edge with a dog. The dog didn't seem to be a true trained guard dog.

For anyone walking by Negril Palms at night please be aware of this situation.

Maybe the owners of Negril Palms want to re-think this measure. We often walk late at night in the off season and there are rarely any other people on the beach after sundown. I am not really sure why they feel it neccessary to place a dog there at this time of year.

Some neighbors of mine in Westmoreland have dogs that chase me and snap at my legs when I ride my bicycle by on my late-afternoon after-work bike rides to Roaring River. I hate them. I like the peaceful cows and goats, but hate the aggressive dogs. Not sure what to do about it. Pepper spray maybe? I biked a lot in the US and did not encounter this.

Pepper Spray is illegal in Jamaica. Besides, harming the animals of your neighbors is a very quick way to make serious enemies.

I highly suggest making friends with the dogs, let them get to know you. Your prior experience in the US plays no part in this as you are not in the US...

Perhaps offering the canines some doggie treats would be a solution?

A long time ago a friend showed me a trick to repel aggressive security dog(s) at residences, commercial properties, or on the street. When a dog STARTS to get aggressive bend down and pretend to pick up a rock and motion as if you are throwing it at them. For some odd reason they run away, as if they have been hit before. The downside - if the owner THINKS you are harming their dog you may get your ### kicked. Or if this trick doesn't work you will get your ### kicked by the dog.

Please, NEVER actually throw anything at an animal or person.

Dog treats and jerk chicken are much better than harming the dogs, as well as probably more likely to succeed!

As a note, when I biked back in high school (40 years ago), our big ride was TOSRV (Tour Of the Scioto River Valley).

Virtually the first thing mentioned to the lesser experienced bikers was to yell a loud and firm NO if a dog ran towards you while riding. You might have to yell something else here...
