Dog treats and jerk chicken are much better than harming the dogs, as well as probably more likely to succeed!
As a note, when I biked back in high school (40 years ago), our big ride was TOSRV (Tour Of the Scioto River Valley).
Virtually the first thing mentioned to the lesser experienced bikers was to yell a loud and firm NO if a dog ran towards you while riding. You might have to yell something else here...

As I said it was a "heads up" to anyone that may find themselves in this area at night. I find some of the responses somewhat peculiar but hey, to each their own. I have vast experience with pet dogs as well as specialized working dogs. To be quite honest I was trying to be polite and somewhat subtle but maybe I should be far more blunt. This dog is a ticking time bomb. Be careful.
