I had the same experience at Rooms on the Beach. Patio door (ground floor) had two locks, and the one we were not using was left open. I wonder if the maid unlocked it. Same story, someone in the room while we were sleeping, very unsettling. We are going back to Negril in February and will be extra careful.

    Christine:
I am so sorry to hear something that alarmed you ocurred. I am going to touch on the ever avoided subject of Jamaican man friends. To you he may appear completely honest and heartwarming because when you are there for short times he is with you. I can not express to you how much I fully understand this. Jamaican man friends very regularly put people in a bad spot. I think I am who advised you to go to NBCC and I will advise everyone still now after hearing this. What i will advise against while solely your business is the belief that men in Jamaica that you have known for a total of weeks in person are to be trusted with your property and the belief that any acts that follow mean they are not affiliated. In Negril and Jamaica in general it is easy for women to find jamaican men who treat them well and make them feel gorgeous this is an industry in Jamaica.
In reference to negril beach club i knew of the previous robberies before staying there however I myself was robbed at both RIU properties in Negril when staying there and I am related to management and they had entered right through front door so it can happen anywhere. At NBCC two trips ago my door remained wide open with safe open and large amounts of contents in the open safe while I was unaware next door from around midnight to 4am, just so there is no leaving out facts, I did have a man sleeping in my room at the time that both thought the other had locked the door, but I hardly think that would deter theives if they are breaking in rooms with sleeping people. I never noticed these things when I returned and at 5am my door had a knock, my X husband went to the door to see who it was and it was the hotel security that had found my key lying outside. He would have returned it earlier had he not been busy with a woman who's room had been robbed while she was out with a man friend she had invited over earlier in the week. The thief was never found to my knowledge.
While this was a huge wake up call for me about my own security it led me further to my belief that NBCC is as safe as the others.
Again Christine I am sorry this happened but the bottom line is NBCC is highly regarded by repeat travelers, use Jamaican men for your benefit for the time period you are there just as they are you and know it is just that do not trust anyone you would not at home with the same real time spent in person together.

In addition, Jean Gaynair was under no contract to give you anything, that is the responsibility of trip insurance not many hotels anywhere would do that. I have been robbed in Cozumel, Ocho Rios, and Negril and it has never been the responsibilty of hotels for reimbursement.

I've been visiting Negril every year since 1979, with very few exceptions tourist that take their new Jamaican friend(s) back to their room are around 99.9% sure you will be robbed or worse. I watched the same two sisters get robbed the first night of their stay two years running, all because their hooked back up with the same dude(s) that took them to the show across the road and their buddies cleaned the room out while they were gone. Now without any money or documents force to return home. Christine, consider yourself lucky Mrs. Gaynair offered any compensation, and that you were not injured or worse for such ill throughout move on your part. And that's a nice as I can be on this subject..

yeah... not for me either but it's apparently pretty common....I noticed it on my first trip. I can't imagine it's a good idea for any women travelling alone to let a man into her room, I dont care what the nature of the relationship is. Just not wise. I'm sorry you got took though, by whomever is responsible for the robbery.

Also gotta agree with Rastagal....IMO there isnt any good excuse for a property to not have effective security hardware on EVERY entrance point in EVERY room. Seriously, nobdy should be worried about wedging a stick into the door while on vacation...that seems a little ridiculous to me. Effective locks should be a facilities priority...seems like a no brainer.

I had heard of two break ins at the hotel I stayed in, just prior to my trip. I was notified via PM on this board, and I appreciated the heads up. When I arrived...the lock on the patio door was attached but it was loose and it was clear that it had been broken off and reinstalled. We put chairs and stuff in front of that door when we went to sleep to make sure that we would hear if somone was trying to get in.

Just wanted to say that theres been lots of really great tips passed on in this thread and I for one really appreciate that. I know I'm for sure gonna take these extra precautionary measures on my next trip...regardless of where I stay.

Sorry to hear this as I've stayed there many times without incidence but I do know of others who have been robbed. I am heading there next week Wednesday and it is my first solo trip. What bldg/unit were you in? I am in a ground floor studio....I've read here that people have suggested staying on a higher floor when going solo but I know elderly sisters who were on the 3rd floor at NBCC and got robbed - this was years ago and they continued to vacation there every year since. I've always been pleased with security and make a point to meet and greet them - it just gives me an extra sense of security. Did you use the wood stick to block the patio door? I also want to know how did you sleep through the thief who appears to have rummaged through your stuff.

    Jamerican71,

I was in building G, was room G10. Of course the wood stick was on the door. But the stick was a little smaller than the space needed (don't know if i explain right, sorry for my english).

Your english is fine...I understood there was a stick but just not sure if it was actually in place. I will also be in bldg G - studio unit on ground floor.....I think it's the same unit. I feel very safe at NBCC and the same precautions I take at home will be the same precautions I always take in Negril and at NBCC. When I check in, I will just make sure the wood is now long enough to secure the patio door.

I'm sure there are some false robbery claims. It doesn't make anyone feel any better knowing it after some creep comes into their room, and takes whatever they feel entitled to.

Although the subject matter is NBCC, this can and has happened at other properties in Negril.

Ladies - if you don't invite strangers into your home then don't do it while on vacation, please contact management right away if the locks don't work on your unit, use the wood slat to block the patio door from opening, if there is a window in your bathroom - place all your toiletries on the window sill and travel with a nightlight. I can't think of other things right now.

Christine - I'm the biggest chicken ever and I would still be shook up from being robbed so I hope you are now doing okay. Don't let that thief keep you from going back to NBCC.
