Got an email from the travel agency, our trip (April 11-18) was cancelled. While I hate it for us, I can't begin to imagine how much pain this is causing the citizens of Jamaica. Hopefully, I will reschedule for the near future.

I;ve been in jamaica since feb 5 and negril since 2/24. I've been pretty must self isolated long before it was called for. I was suppose to leave 5/20 but received an email from SW stating that flights will begin 5/21. I have an extension but ja is waiving any overstays under the circumstances. its pretty quiet here, the fruit has tried to eek out a living but i think she's given up. only excitement was the boat drama! I spend my days doing healthy things i would not/could not do at home like walking around the complex and swimming in the pool. I have mobility issues so am not comfortable swimming in the sea by myself. I'm enjoying the quiet and solitude...being a solo traveler, this is right up my alley. I always wanted my own deserted island.....now i have it!
where are you staying
Back when I found this forum, a mere couple weeks ago, I was supposed to arrive in late May! But due to the turn of events afterwards, I had to postpone the trip for a further, unknown, date. I could, at least, get a part of the price of the plane tickets back, but that's all. I really hope this epidemic will be over fast, let's hope it won't last longer than it did in China...
beach club
I wish that I had stayed to my original departure date.

I'm not elderly, nor sick, nor weak (maybe bitter). The disease does not affect all equally, but the media is preying upon public fears and ignorance. Covid-19 kills an estimated 13.4% of patients 80 and older, compared to 1.25% of those in their 50s and 0.3% of those in their 40s. The vast majority recover. They should have just targeted the vulnerable for Protection.
I wish I had stayed in JA, the beach is always great!
Just the vulnerable, that is not so simple. Who's not vulnerable? Heart disease, diabetes, obesity, COPD, and high blood pressure are underlying conditions that can cause a bad outcome with this virus. That describes a huge swath of the population in North America.
The majority of those hospitalized and infected in our county are under 50 years old. The over 60 people just die after a few days, its the younger folks who are requiring intensive medical care for days or ever weeks. Every country should have locked down there borders in February. Then we wouldn't be in this mess, AND have our borders essentially closed. We stupid 'Americans' are great at ignoring problems until they land right on our toes. We watched the situation in Italy and denied that it would be a problem.
Jan. 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” — Trump in a CNBC interview.
Jan. 30: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five — and those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for us … that I can assure you.” — Trump in a speech in Michigan.
Feb. 10: “Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases — 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.” — Trump at the White House. (See our item “Will the New Coronavirus ‘Go Away’ in April?“)
Feb. 14: “There’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm — historically, that has been able to kill the virus. So we don’t know yet; we’re not sure yet. But that’s around the corner.” — Trump in speaking to National Border Patrol Council members.
Feb. 23: “We have it very much under control in this country.” — Trump in speaking to reporters.
Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” — Trump in a tweet.
Feb. 26: “So we’re at the low level. As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time. So we’ve had very good luck.” — Trump at a White House briefing.
Feb. 26: “And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.” — Trump at a press conference.
Feb. 26: “I think every aspect of our society should be prepared. I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.” — Trump at a press conference, when asked if “U.S. schools should be preparing for a coronavirus spreading.”
Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear.” — Trump at a White House meeting with African American leaders.
Unfortunately that isn't close to the facts. Hard to believe that 3 weeks ago lots of people on this thread alone were still planning on travelling. Question now is how much worse will it get before things start to improve? I don't think anyone has the answer but one at least slightly piece of positivity - our province has started to put out numbers of people recovered, not just infected. Yesterday they reported 8 new cases, but 7 recovered.

Just saw this article today

"A lot of digging into various municipal data portals reveals, based on the population tested, that rates can vary from, at most, eight-tenths of a percent in New York City to two-one-hundredths of a percent in Phoenix. "
"Did you know the chances of recovery from the coronavirus are about 98%—if you catch it? "
0.008 * 0.02 = 0.00016 or 1/6250

"12. Odds of being struck by lightning — 1 in 114,195
It’s true, there aren’t a whole lot of people who get struck by lightning according to the National Safety Council — but it does happen. Just keep in mind that most people who are “struck” by lightning actually get hit from electricity traveling underground after the strike, so wear rubber-soled shoes and remember to crouch with your feet close together if a strike is possible"
I take it back, getting hit by lightning is still rarer
so
If you have any lust for life why would you take the chance? I am 45 and in great shape, great health. I have a great job, house, money, etc. I cancelled our annual trip to Florida this month (was there in January) and didn't think twice about it. Why risk it? Even if you are in a "low risk" category have you seen what has happened to perfectly normal people? No way I can risk that for my family, all because I want to drink Red Stripes, Appleton rum, and listen to reggae muzik on the beach. Like texting and driving--it can wait.
