    What The #ell Happened

I picked a friend up at the airport Saturday and after I dropped him off I realised I hadn't eaten all day. Went the Chesters Chicken at the Texaco at around 12 midnight. What was in the warming tray looked disgusting and the unmotivated lady looking at her phone could be bothered to tell me when a fresh batch was coming out, so I left. Went to my old stand-by, Corner Bar. The place was empty as there were a few shows down the beach. No menu with prices posted beside the cashier. A Red Stripe turned out to be $400J and a 3 piece chicken was $1,100. The chicken pieces were small and cold. What the hell happened?

    The picture represents $1,500J

I can't think of any restaurants open that late AND accepting new customers. Corner Bar has been closed at 9pm once when I was there because they ran out of one of their secret spices for the chicken. And $400 is a decent price now for Red Stripe. Its $250 in the stores, Try Rick's, be sure to bring your bank card!

I'd guess that part of "what happened" is that now $1500 JMD is $9.59 US. Over the past 5 years, the Jamaican dollar is down 14.45% against the US dollar. 5 years ago, $1500 JMD was $11.43 US.

I last visited Negril in 2022. Regrettably, I don't know when I will be back, and that is because of the sky high cost of everything. Being a Canadian, the low flying Loonie (Canadian Dollar) makes it truly prohibitive for me to visit Jamaica. The $1500J chicken and Red Stripe in the photo equates to $14 Cdn. I just can't do it at the current local prices and exchange rates! I empathize with all my Jamaican friends having to live with these prices.
I miss Jamaica very much, but visiting Negril.com helps!

I don't want to scare you away suray. Red Dragon still has $250 Red Stripe and the pork there is still pretty cheap. You can still stay here, eat and drink on a budget, and I dare say maybe even a little less than living in Canada. KD and patties and the best part, the only ice you see here is in a glass of rum.

Consider staying at a property that has a kitchen. That way you can keep costs down with eating out.

Plenty of cheap places to eat. I saw Vinnies is 1200 J for jerk chicken. Where in the states or elsewhere can you eat for that? The pork and beer at Red Dragon is tough to beat too...
