    Re: Black River tour

I would combine another excursion or two for the same trip, make it an all-day-er. We bundled the black river, Appleton rum distillery, and Y.S. falls, and stopped for some lunch somewhere in-between. Either find yourself a driver from the transportation section on this site, or a lot of hotels can set it up for you with a tour company. Yes, it was a long day, I think we were gone 11 to 12 hours, but while you're out that way might as well get a few locations in. I would recommend the private driver option; you can customize the trip as you go.

This is Rasta George in 2007 and then again some 15 years later. We are both a little greyer and a little heavier now (Rasta is the guy on the right LOL). Rasta George is well known around Black River and will take you up the river in his boat to show you all the floral and fauna and maybe even check out a few crocodiles on the way. He will then take you out to Floyds Pelican Bar. The river tour can be as long as you like or just a quick trip. The pelican Bar is about a 20 minute boat ride out to sea. Heading out to Pelican Bar can be a little rough at first while the boat is in the river current but it smooths out fast.

If you were asking for advice (and you are) I'd take an early transport service (located on the top of this page under "Transport") and do the Appleton's Rum Factory tour first. It a great tour and you will learn much while taking taste tests through all the stages of the rum production. Any Boardies here that haven't taken the tour for a few years, I'd highly recommend taking it again. Appleton has a nicely renovated welcome centre and the rum tasting is now in a classroom setting rather than the hallway. During the tasting of the final product, you can now actually tasted the scented "notes" that you experienced during the initial tasting while on the tour. So, morning at Appleton and then link up with Rata George for the river tour and then Pelican Bar. Have a late lunch out on the sea at Pelican bar and then head home.

Some might say you could get a YS falls tour in there but doing all 3.... YS Falls, Black River and Appleton is a packed day and you won't be able to truly enjoy all 3 as you'll be rushed to move on.

If you don't get lunch in, then on your way home, I'd highly recommend a stop at Omar's Jerk. Just a little jerk drum spot on the side of the road but the best jerk chicken and/or pork you have ever had. Omar's is located in between Bluefields Beach and the town of Bluefields, beside the river.

Rasta George said things are slow and he'd appreciate the business. He can be reached at (876)355-1947
