    Miss Sonia RIP

It is being reported that Miss Sonia, of Miss Sonia's Patties, passed away this morning. She was in the hospital in Sav since the middle of the month, having problems that were diagnosed as stage 4 cancer. We didn't know her well, but enjoyed meals at her restaurant for years and always enjoyed just visiting with her. She was religious and demonstrated her faith by feeding the hungry. She had a lot of difficulties over the last few months - her house burned to the ground in August due to an electrical fire, then the huricane, then the health issues - but remained positive. Here's a picture another friend sent.

    Re: Miss Sonia RIP

We've been traveling to Negril/Jamaica for 17 years now, and feel like the second trip (in October 2012) was a formidable one that really helped turn us into true repeat visitors.

Our first night we were hoping to try Miss Sonia's patties -- we'd heard a lot about them while doing some research ahead of the trip. So our first evening, we were walking the beach road in the dark, looking for the restaurant when a woman called out for us and asked what we were looking for. We said "Miss Sonia's", the woman asked us to hold on and then went in a couple minutes Miss Sonia came out and asked us to follow her. She led us to a nice little outdoor area at a small table. She took our order, her grandson got us some beers, and we had some delicious patties, thanked Miss Sonia, paid and went on our way.

The next day, my wife and I were walking the beach road again and passed by a restaurant with a big "Miss Sonia's" sign, but were confused, as that definitely was not where we'd had dinner the night before. Then it clicked -- Miss Sonia's restaurant wasn't open, but she welcomed us to dine in her backyard. This really touched us, and it's a story we always tell to friends here while trying to explain the intangible magic of Negril that you can't see in pictures. And one of the main reasons we have returned so many times.

I was actually able to re-tell this story to Miss Sonia when my wife, 9 year old son & I visited last spring. We are so sorry to hear about her passing, and feel like stories like ours is just one way that her legacy will live on. Rest in Power Miss Sonia.

This news brings some tears to my eyes. She was a gentle trusting woman of faith. Before her place got moved 15 ish years ago, I use to eat and drink there on the honor system (help myself to the beer frig), if I was low on money one of her kids would drive me down to exchange some. My last time seeing her was when I asked if she could cook us up a dinner and to give me the list of what she needed from the market. I dropped of the food but never made it to dinner, my girlfriend picked up an alwfull ear infection that changed our travel plans. Seeing her dressed up for Sunday church......never seen white outfits so white and a smile so big.
