Mo, the first year we went we also did not do the route cabs, but the second year, I steeled myself and did it. Here's how to start:

    1) Get 2 Jamaica $100s and 2 JA $50 bills.
    2) Go out to the street on the beach side. Look as though you might possibly consider taking a route cab.
    3) In about 30 seconds, a route cab will beep at you (it will have red plates and the route will be stenciled on the front fender). Raise your arm, and when the driver pulls in, say "Route cab?" He'll say "Yes".
    4) Get in. Say "Roundabout".
    5) At the roundabout, hand him JA $150 and get out.
    6) Walk across the street (don't get run over here - remember what direction traffic comes from!).
    7) Repeat step 3.
    8) Get in. Say "Coco La Palm".
    9) When he stops at CCLP, hand him $150 JA and get out.

You will have spent 10 minutes and JA $300, and now you know the route cab system. Now you can explain how it works to newbies!

Great advice! I have to say I really enjoyed my time with route taxis. You meet some interesting characters with the drivers and also every local I ever rode with was very nice and interesting to talk to. I routinely would go from places along the Best End to all sorts of places along the beach and paid $500j each way every time for my wife and I. I would just hop in and say $400j to so and so and every time the answer was "Ya Mon" or something similar. The extra $100J was a tip.
No need to worry, I assure you.
Look at possibly staying on the cliffs as well. From your review you two seem to enjoy just kicking back and the West End is a great place to do it. All sorts of great bars as well....... Nice review. Thanks for sharing.
