Question about a review I seen about our hotel

This will be my wife and I first trip to Jamaica. I just read a review about our hotel at Riu Tropical Bay on trip advisor that you should never put money in the safe because the maids can get in them. Is this true?

Also has anyone stayed here before? How was your stay here? We will be arriving 2/5 to 2/12/12 (If this helps)

Don't know about Riu, But if your safe is robbed after you locked it properly It would be A inside robbery, unless safe is ripped out of the wall. If you don't put your cash in safe where do you put it ? Soon Come Limo Mon!

While the story could be true, it's rare to hear of folks losing money that was kept in a safe. As for RIU, it's a nice place, but at a hotel with hundreds of rooms, it's only natural to hear of break-ins more frequently than at a hotel with just a couple of dozen rooms, like many of the indies hotels.

i have been to RIU club about 15 times and RIU TB twice, never had anything missing, plus they've found my cell phone a couple of times when I left it around after imbibing too much!

    Room safe at RIU

I would take the precaution of buying a pacsafe and putting it in your room. The website is pacsafe.com. The way they can get in your safe is by spraying talcum powder over the keypad to see which numbers you have used. If you wipe all the keys on the safe they will not be able to tell your code. It is like dusting for finger prints. Enjoy your vacation.

I am not aware of the intricacy of the review but I am aware of the policy. If you are staying at RIU and you have trouble with your safe AFTER YOU HAVE LOCKED IT as in you verified it shut and locked. Maintenance cannot access your safe for you even upon verifying you are the real hotel guest. There is a 2 (engineer)/ property/security manager sign off recorded sheet required for anyone to help you with a locked safe. Most people I hear of are complaining of a wait to access their safes and long wait times due to this policy when safes at the RIU's malfunction as sometimes an engineer has to come in off shift from home if there are not two head engineers onsite (such as 11pm shift). Also those of you that have stayed there know that there is an emergency lock that occurs if you miskey your safe 3 times on the rooms with digital safes at Tropical Bay requiring managers or security heads.

I stayed at the Trop 5 times and never had a problem...Club Riu may be a different story.I read where you should wipe all the keys down when you first get in,they can spray the keys which shows up in black light so they may know what code you put on the safe......Never happened to me but I wipe it anyway.

Wow... this just shows the bad guys will always find a way to do their misdeeds. Good to know though. I would never thought of such a thing.
