We had gone to Xtabi earlier with Sweetie pie to stake out the cave area and she helped me find the right spot to pose. No problem. We were ready to go...
Markus and I returned to Xtabi a few days later with the intention of taking our cave pictures. I was even going to film a behind the scenes documentary of the photo shoot. So excited!
But then....We had some unexpected visitors...
This video footage shows what happened...
If you look closely you can see the first bat flying by Markus's head as we enter. I didn't even see that one, then Markus starts pointing them all out. That's when I broke into a run, Markus grabbed the camera from me and kept filming.
You'll see at one point 2 bats fly by when he is filming a small one hanging out on the cliff walls. One actually swooped down and whacked him in the side of his head with it's wings! He falls backwards from the impact, the video loses focus at that point while he regains his footing.
While this was occuring, I was standing outside the cave trembling uncontrollably. I just couldn't go back in there. We were outnumbered and they were dive bombing!!
Despite the bats, Markus propped up the camera on the cave walls and snapped these two pictures.
I'm proud of my brave husband. He would not let anything deter him from this mission.
Rest assured: This is not the end of the story, Patty Sather. I WILL go back someday and confront those bats. I WILL get that picture for Team Girly Girl.
