Election Night Fun! A no trip report report pt1

I just got back from Negril yesterday and it was quite possibly the best trip EVER! And there have been many over the years. I am trying to post a video of the party on election night December 29th, 2011. I had just arrived in Negril a few hours earlier and I was hanging out at Canoe with Tic Toc, Rob and Lisa. When we are getting ready to leave we see this bus coming down the road with a whole heap of people and horns and music! Everyone was in such a great mood because of the outcome of the election, there was a LOT of celebrating going on! We hopped on the bus and joined the party! We got let off at the round about and it continued on the celebration. What a great start to the night! And this was just the beginning!

They announced the election at a rally in Mandeville the day we rode motorcycles to the South Coast - huge motorcades of Holness/JLP supporters, honking horns, wearing green, etc.

Over the next three weeks back in Negril you could see Orange flags and banners along the streets and the "PNP" car riding all over playing the "Portia" song.

On election day I spent the day in my yard with friends -even though it was mellow in Negril I didn't want to get out in the mix.

The next day we picked up friends from the airport and boy! Every city we went through was partying in the streets! Got some great shots and video as well.

I'd never been here for an election so it was a thrill, especially since this one was relatively violence-free. And...living in PNP country of course made it more festive

Wow - I would have assumed you had been here for an election before - this one was no different than the last 3 or 4 - and so you know, the stories you heard of the elections in the distant past are simply that... the distant past!

Glad you enjoyed this one so much! The last 6 elections here in Jamaica have been incredible to experience!

    Rastagal,

We are so glad that you and Tic decided to take our advice to jump on the bus - you got to experience a moment in Jamaican history that will no doubt be talked about for centuries, literally! For the first appointed female Prime Minister to once again gain the position of Prime Minister will be something long remembered on the island!

Portia was Prime Minister for what, 18 months - 5 or 6 years ago?

Folks I've talked to here in the community have mixed feelings but my friend is thrilled - he thinks the JLP had no respect for the people. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I felt excited and pleased to have been a fly on the wall for both the election and the time leading up to it - especially outside of Negril where it was a bit more "colorful".

Being in Negril during Election Day was off the charts for me! I had no idea before I came. I was thrilled to be there and experience the election. The cliffs were electric that night! We joined in several celebration parties along the West End Road while walking home from dinner. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
