Day 1: A Little Back Tracking

This report is strictly for entertainment purposes and anyone that reads this may not post rude or ignorant comments, so if you are that type of person you might as well quit reading right now.

Hmmm, where to begin. I was flying in on Thursday 12/29 and I was to meet up with 2 other friends that were getting in next day Friday. So my plan was to get to Negril, go to the Cambio, get a Digicel, and just wing it from there. So I get to the hotel (Hidden Paradise) and check in. Have to wait a few minutes for my room, but I am early so no problem. I just hang out in the front and pop open the laptop to jump online for a few minutes. I had already asked if I was going to be given a room next to my friends checking in the next day, but there was pretty much no way that was going to happen because they were full and the only 2 rooms left were in different places…that actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. More about that later.

So the girl at the front desk tells me the room is ready so we walk down….as I step up on the porch I am wondering why there are some very young looking kids sitting on the verandah (the way the rooms are set up is 2 rooms connected by one big patio) one kid with a huge spliff hanging out of his mouth, and the other sitting at a table filled with empty beer bottles. So I guess these are my neighbors for the next week…they look no more than 15 MAYBE 16 but that would be pushing it. I can tell right away from their accents that they are Italian…where the heck are their parents?

So I quickly change clothes and grab the money I want to take to the Cambio. I start out down the road and I am really surprised that I did not get approached or honked at for a taxi! The first person that said anything to me was some lady asking me if I knew where the Cambio was…I told her she was standing right in front of it but it looked like it was closed. (election day). So, I quickly look across the street at Times Square and wonder if their ATM is working (it rarely does). So this lady looks totally spaced out and lost and I tell her that I’m going to just try the ATM machine instead. She starts going on and on asking about ATM fee’s and bank fees and how much does my bank charge, blah blah blah. Finally I get saved by a taxi driver asking if I need a ride. Whew! This lady was a little fruity in the loops if you ask me. So I hop in the taxi and just decide I will go to Scotia bank since I have to hit up Digicel anyway.

In the taxi I go and we drive across the street and stop. He has to go inside his house for something real quick..OK, no problem. Then he is back and we are on the way…nope, have to stop at Coral Seas to give his buddy something first. Ok, no problem..I don’t have anywhere to be anyway and if feels great!

Ok so FINALLY we are on the way to town and who do I see crossing the street as we pass Traveler’s???……TIC TOC!!!!! I don’t know her personally but I know it’s her from all the photos on the board. So I tell the driver to stop the car and I jump out like some crazy stalker yelling TIC TOC, TIC TOC!!! It’s me Rastagal!! LMAO. How weird is that?

So we chat for a minute and I tell her I will meet her back at Traveler’s bar after I am done with my running around.

A few stops later and I am back at my hotel dropping my stuff off. I head back up to Traveler’s to meet Tic, chatting with a few people along the way.
It really is much more laid back than usual. I’m not sure if it’s because there were so many tourists down for the Holiday or what, but I’m not complaining!
We chill out for a bit at the bar and decide it’s time to head to Canoe for the Webcast. I would have liked to change and freshen up but no time for that…gotta go! I make sue to let Tic know I will have to cut our time at Canoe short because I have to get all dolled up for the Jungle! I can’t go in a maxi dress! NO SUH!!!
I already posted what happened when we left Canoe….our ride on the PARTY BUS!!!! After we got dropped off we each headed our own way and agreed to meet up in a bit for Jungle!!!! WooHoo!!!

good details. i notice you are loyal to Hidden Paradise, which is not a particularly high profile hotel. What is the main selling point?

Also, i am here now and have noticed some LONG lines at the ATMs .... money money money!

Well it's not the Ritz but I like the location, the owner is cool, you can do what you want without anyone in your business (most important), and it just has a nice vibe. No problems.

Yeah man, I had to go to the ATM 3 times during the trip and each time the line was looong! But it seemed like either way you had to go downtown..if you had money you had to get it changed by a guy on the street downtown because the Cambio was closed most of the holiday, and if you didn't have it on you, you had to go to the ATM. It was a lose lose situation. lol

    Say What?!

Sounds like the trip is off to a fun start (Despite the crazy neighbors)!, Loved the party bus footage you posted in the other thread and how cool that you bumped into Tic! ( I would have totally jumped out of my cab and yelled the same thing! haha)

Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to hearing about the Jungle and the rest of your trip

I walk down to my room to try to see what my suitcase has in store for me to wear to Jungle. I turn the shower on and let it run while I rummage through my clothes to find something suitable to wear. Ok, this will do. Back to the shower I go and lo and behold…cold water. Are you kidding me? Ok, well I’ve done this before, no big deal. Jump in, wash off and get out QUICK!

I did not bring a hair dryer since I had already over packed, so one of my friends was bringing hers the next day. Will have to work with what I got. My hair didn’t turn out so great but who cares..it’s dark in there anyway. LOL.
So it’s now about 11pm and I’m not quite sure what is going on with Tic. A friend we were with earlier calls me and says he will come down and chill out while we wait for her to get ready. Ok, no problem. Ok so now it going on midnight and I’m wondering what to do at this point. So we decide to start walking down the street to where she is staying. Then about half way there I say “Wait a minute, what if she went straight there and we walk all this way for nothing”!? So we turn around and end up right back in front of my hotel as I debate if we should just go to Jungle and try to find her…..as I am contemplating what to do, she rolls up in a taxi ready to go! Yaay!
I will post a few pics of the night but they can’t even begin to capture the fun I had. I danced til I couldn’t dance anymore…and then kept on after that! I got back to the room sometime after 4. It was a great first night and I can’t believe I actually managed to stay up more than 24 hours! Let’s just say I barely made it to Tic Toc’s party the next day by 230! LOL.

nice, glad you decided to do the "non-trip report" report! I am enjoying it very much. I have Hidden Paradise on my list of places to stay--I am usually on a pretty tight budget and the prices and what I have heard about the spot fit right in with what i look for in Negril. Plus I love the views of the morass from there. Is security good there? I travel solo and I like a place that is laid back enough to allow visitors but also somewhere that I feel secure.
