Mrs. Peel speaks (for herself)

In the interest of real objectivity I asked Mrs. Peel to tell what transpired regarding breaking our first date, etc.

Mrs. Peel:
First, I want to say that Rum truly was my best friend. However, wasn't your best friend supposed to be your husband? Wasn't the person you shared all of your thoughts with as little or petty as those thoughts might be supposed to be with your significant other? I would say "yes" to both but that wasn't the case for me. Don't get me wrong. In my world, the first 10 years of my marriage were every girl's dream but then things changed.

Alcohol became increasingly important in my husband's world. It got worse. When Rum and I began working together the substance abuse was in the beginning stages. I became great friends with Rum because I didn't have the "friendship" with my spouse, like the story books or movies tell you is going to be there.

It's true, Rum and I didn't speak for almost 10 years. When we agreed to see each other I realized how much I missed our friendship. What Rum didn't know was I canceled our first date because I had to go back up north. My husband had lost his job. The cherry on the sundae? He lost it because of his addiction. This was the second time his drinking led to his termination. I didn't tell Rum this because I never wanted him to know I wasn't truly happy in my life. I believed he was truly happy and I wanted him to think the same thing of me.

A few weeks later I had to go to Washington, D.C. on a business trip. My husband wasn't working so I decided to make one more attempt at saving our marriage. The trip started out good but became a disappointment when I discovered he was continuing his affair with the vodka bottle. It was shortly after that trip that I again contacted Rum. At this point, our relationship was still all attraction; nothing physical.
