Irieworld, Can sympathize with your situation. This old Hippie has run across employment ups and downs over my lifetime as so many others have and will continue to have. I could tell you so many stories of people subletting their apartments because of financial difficulties or just to save money. People would leave NYC in the summer, and travel around, go in on a group rental down the Jersey shore or the Hamptons. The thing I would want you to think about is if an opportunity came up for a good job could you respond from Negril quickly enough so you don't loose out . Having to jet to NYC all of a sudden could be big bucks for an interview that hopefully would work out. On the plus side, the tranquility and cool vibes of Negril could stimulate you to write something great while on vacation. Optimize all angles. Remember you can always work a deal with most of the Hotels when staying for a few months. Xtabi, Sommerset Village, Catcha Gardens, Sea Star Inn, Hidden Paradise, hotels on the budget side would be good to look into. I too had a dissapointment. Thought i was locked in as a studio cameraman at NBC at Rockefeller Center when NABET went on strike. No ccool job,no cool apartment in the city, no trip to Jamaica that year, just unemployment.Life goes on. One door closes another door opens. All the best. Good Luck, Dan

Good luck with your job hunt. A friend of mine did the same thing, stayed long term in Jamaica while searching online, went home when she had a number of good interviews lined up and has been successfully employed ever since. I second the motion regarding GREEN LEAF CABINS. It is located on the land side of Norman Manley Blvd., across the street from Coco La Palm. They have WiFi and can offer some very inexpensive housing options - especially if you don't mind using the outdoor showers. It is clean, secure and the folks there will make you feel at home. Talk to Jennifer James, 1-876-429-6438.

Also unemployment frowns on vacations especially those out of the country. If it's in the US you can say you are thinking of relocating there. You have to go online to get your unemployment every week from another country. If found out you will have to pay back and lose any future money. Just saying.......

They can frown but they cannot stop you. You could have had the trip planned & paid for from before you became unemployed. They cannot stop you. As long as you have legitmate job search efforts made, you are entitled to your benefits.

"They can frown but they cannot stop you."
In California they can - and will - stop paying your benefits. A week or two week vacation that you'd planned in advance and can prove that you can probably plead your case. But a month or more? You need to get your "ducks" in a row regarding that. Each state varies. I had a friend visit last year for just a week who was on unemployment and he had his situation "covered". No loss of benefits. These days you can never be too careful.

....in Texas we have to certify without perjury that we are "able" and "available" for work and complete our weekly job searches with minimum of 5 applications. We cannot turn down any interviews so if one was to come up it would require flying back. While you are researching and contemplating maybe you could ask Rob to delete this post just so this is not in writing on the internet (just a suggestion). Best of luck - I am on unemployment also and "re-grouping" lol. Good new things to come................

Irieworld. I hope your able to reveive benefits while out of the country. I can only speak from a Canadian perspective which uses one rule for the entire country (federal employment insurance). Here you must be in the country to receive benefits (no exceptions). The only way around it is to fraudulently claim your here and hope you don't get audited. It wou;dn't leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Good luck and all the best in your job search.

Irieworld, LeMirage on the Westend has a one bedroom and a two bedroom cottage across the road from the resort.
Contact Nadine. Sorry I do not have the # handy. You will also be able to have sea access and you can use the pool at Mirage.
