    - book -

the card is only for frequent border-crossers - like USA residents who live in, say, Niagara Falls, and work RIGHT across the border in Canada - it's specifically for ppl who use it frequently by land, so they can cross the border quickly and easily (for example, by car to get to work.)

when people talk in general about "getting a passport" it's always the book they are speaking of - that's the standard. The card is a special thing; not common.

"The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by land. The passport book is the only document approved for international travel by air. "

They have to have the book
I think the card is only good for cruises or something like that, the card will not work to travel to Jamaica
I really dont get the purpose of the card honestly.

Sorry MissBlue I didnt see your post when I was answering
But yes, when we had our wedding last year we had a lot of guests who were getting there first passport and so the card vs. book question came up and the Clerk Of Court here told me it could be used on cruises to the caribbean but not flights

I just clicked on your link above and it says this:
The passport card is the wallet-size travel document that can only be used to re-enter the United States at land border-crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. The card provides a less expensive, smaller, and convenient alternative to the passport book for those who travel frequently to these destinations by land or by sea.

No problem! I remember her specifically saying that because I remember reacting that way back then thinking that just sounds stupid to buy a card that is only good for cruises and canada/mexico.

But either way, why would anyone get the card and not the book, its not that much of a discount anyway, it just seems pointless to me....but just my opinion.

because it's realy intended for people who use it constantly - i.e. someone who lives directly across a border and crosses it every day, for instance, on their daily commute. in upstate NY between Niagara Falls & Canada, it allows daily commuters to cross thru much faster than going through the full C & I process - they have a special entryway, show their card, and done.
