    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

my FAVORITE topic::>> route taxis and the fares

the FACT of the matter IS:::>> Jamaican route taxis are for EVERY-body...ANY-body

fare-wise..??.. ---- the fare IS what it IS
there's NO need whatsoever to pay more than the going rate
....don't matter if you're local, foreigner, ex-pat, martian, chicken, goat, etc etc etc blah blah raa raa

EVERYBODY pays same thing, all the time, everytime, anytime [[period]]

    to-me,
    that for-local-only comment reads-like something-something that a route-taxi-man would write/post
    or something-something by some-somebody with $kin the route-taxi-game

don't fall for the local-only foolishness, and all the other likkle innuendos attached thereto
....pay the same-thing your housekeeper at your resort pays.

the Jamaican route-taxi it's kinda sorta like like public transportation here in WashingtonDC/USofA
..that is to say:::>> there's NO-way i'd pay more than the going-rate to ride on the bus or subway here in-foreign

    no way

    above,
you-wrote::>> that the cabbies were starving

    who told you that..??..

ALL the Ja-taxi-men i know are eating VERY-good.

yes route taxis are a set cost and I always use them in JA. If they have room in their cab and pick you up you ride the same as other people--Jamaican or from foreign. I don't agree with the idea that if you are not from JA you should pay more money--the subway in NYC does not charge more for tourists than locals, or the taxi cabs for that matter. If I have any extra money I tip--but do not feel obligated to do so. Charter taxis in JA on the other hand, you have to negotiate a price and pay more. I am always on a real budget when on trips as it is a big thing for me to even pay for trips when I can afford them--so route taxis are my mode of transportation.

    mi-personally,
stay away from using those so-called '.charter.' taxis

    can't dew-wheat
    :-(
    too expensive for me

    it was just the other-day,
as i chatted with some folks here in-foreign
    about the Ja-route taxi thing-y

i told them that a Jamaican charter-taxi was as if they were to hire a limousine here in-foreign

    so,
    if you got deep pockets,
and can afford a limo, then go for it

    that won't work for me
    so,
    i ride in Ja-route taxis EXCLUSIVE-ly,
..as i was taught & trained
....by my Lucea-host/landlord and my resort housekeeper, and many-many other island residents

    so,
IF/when i wanna ride from the round-about to RootsBamboo,
    i have a choice::::::: i can go for Ja$100 in a route-taxi or US$25 in a limo (aka, '.charter.')

    ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
    for me, it's a NO-brainer

    and i won't/don't do the 3rd-world guilt-tripping either/neither

yeah Smith, agreed. My first trip to Negril, not knowing any better, got a cab outside my hotel on the beach to take me to hi lo and back and he charged 20 dollars and I also tipped on top of that. I don't ever take taxis where I live, I walk, bus, and subway. So the sticker shock was big--and way more than NYC taxi rates for the same distance. By trip number 2 I learned about route taxis and have been a happy passenger ever since.

We are not saying foreigners should pay more. No problem if you take a route taxi, foreigner or local alike. Just understand the difference in cost to operate the same product as in the United States or Canada. How much does a 20 mile taxi ride cost in Chicago or New York?

New York's economy is also much healthier than Jamaica's. The New York Subway can afford to set prices to that effectively off-set their costs. It's that simple.

We take local taxis all the time. We just give them a little bit more to help them out if we can afford to.

that-place has done soooooooooooooooo-MUCH for me

    so tru-tru

    most-importantly,
that-place, with it's stylee, taught me not to be foolish with my money

    for example,
i can spend US$1,000 and stay 3-months, doing as my Ja-associates trained/taught me
    or
    i can spend the same-US$1,000
    for a week-end, doing things in a different-manner (e.g., '.flex.' like a from-foreign-tourist)

LOL. The subway has 7 million riders a day. You sure it's not the fares charged that cover their expenses? And me hopping in a route taxi adds to their revenue. More people more fare. Add I tip as well, as I'm sure many others do as well. And we all know some route taxi drivers supplement their income doing/selling other things, so are they really hurting that bad?
