    Fact...
The going rates are set based on the typical wage for the local workers. The typical wage being less the $60.00us per week.
    Fact...
In order to serve the growing tourism trade JUTA was created to specifically serve the travelers visiting the island. "The JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travelers Association) - Negril Chapter was formed in the early 1960's and was founded with 50 original members. JUTA was formed because of a need to provide tour and taxi movement in and around Negril as well as from International Airports and all tourist attractions and locations throughout Jamaica."

    In summation...
The route taxi system was created to serve the local population...while there won't be any reason visitors to the island are not allowed to use the route taxi system...it is a misconception for anyone to think it was created for visitors & local population alike...that was never the intention.
Regardless they make more money off of tourist. Many of whom tip on top the standard fare or pay too much because they do not know.

Not everyone has the same spending budget, so let me ask you this....
Lets just say in order to go to JA, I have to 'penny pinch" while there and take route taxis instead of charters everywhere that I go (bank, breakfast, dinner, lunch, webcast, etc) to save money......
would it be better for the JA'n economy if I didn't visit the island at all since I cant afford charters?

All I did was point out the facts!
It should be quite obvious that the local route taxi fare is based on the wages here in Jamaica...read what I wrote above...$60.00us weekly average salary. There certainly isn't taxi fare that cheap in North America as the route taxi is here.

Again...it's JUST the facts/information I offered...not speculation...and not an argument from me whether you pay 100J ($1.15us) for a route taxi or charter a taxi for a few dollars more!
