Kuyaba?
Markus and I are really really hoping we can make it to Jamaica in April to celebrate our anniversary. We’ve been faithfully putting money into our little “iriebox” for months. We would like to do a beach/Cliffs split up. We want to stay somewhere romantic on the cliffs for our actual anniversary (4/20) and then move over to an affordable place on the beach.
I’ve been looking at various different beach hotel options. Bar B Barn, Fun Holiday, White Sands, The Palms Resort..
"The Unofficial Negril.com Reader’s survey" created by Gerryg123 listed Kuyaba as one of the top favorite hotels. I always thought Kuyaba was one of those really expensive boutique hotels way out of our price range. I never bothered even looking at it as an option. The “preliminary” results of the survey made me curious, so I looked…
…And I was surprised to find out that I was wrong! The rustic cabins start at only $56.00! That’s a great price for a prime spot on the beach!
Has anyone stayed in one of the Rustic Cabins?
When they say “rustic” – are we talking dilapidated with roaches crawling around, holes in the sheets and cold water showers or just basic old school charm?
What was your experience like there? How is the food there?
Would you recommend it?

Clarity,
Reach out to Mr Twister. He is a regular at Kuyaba. We went to visit them a couple of times as they were there same time as us in October and to be honest that was my first time on the property. It is really nice. They have a special room they always stay in and I think he got a good deal on it (not sure if that was a good repeat customer deal or not) but the room was REALLY nice. I would definitely stay there if I wasn't such a cliff girl. But I think I remember him saying something about the rustic cottages in terms of them not being so great. I can't remember why, maybe because they were loud or something, I mean like you could hear everything when inside them......either way, if he comes along and sees this I am sure he can elaborate.

Clarity we looked at the property and the upstairs suites are very romantic. The rustic cottage looked ok but not very romantic. Here is a review on trip advisor and the person seems to tell the good and the ok

I have had dinner there once and it was real good and sitting near the beach made it even more wonderful except for the vagrant that needed to be driven from our table.

with a "gwan on your way" our driver and dinner guest took care of the problem

I have stayed at Kuyaba in the "honeymoon suite" and it was really nice and affordable, it is only just over $100 per night in high season and around $85 in low. This room has an AMAZING porch and overlooks the trees and grounds closest to the restaurant. OH...and speaking of the restaurant...OH MY GOD!!! Amazing food!!! So SOOOO good. Last reach I was in Negril for a total of 8 days and ate there 5 of those for dinner and 6 for lunch. It is a bit pricey, but so sooooo good. and VERY ROMANTIC. Last year while I was in Negril my very good friends stayed at Kuyaba in a regular room and I visited them several times. The room was nice, basic, but nice. the price for these rooms is only around $75 in low season and just under $100 in high season. You can also rent a fridge for $6.
The property is beautiful and the staff is friendly. It is in a great location to do whatever you fancy on your trip. I did see inside one of the rustic cabins one night last year when I was exploring while waiting for my carry out. There was a friendly couple on the porch playing cards and we struck up conversation, I asked if I could see what their cabin looked like and they said sure. I didn't want to delve too deep and be rude but I did take a sneak peek and it looked ok. It was the one by itself, closest to the beach. Anyway...I hope that my info helps some and I would be happy to answer any other questions that you my have. Did I mention how GREAT the food is there??? LOL.

Clarity, My Wife and I and 2 children stayed at Kuyaba for a week and loved it. We stayed in the deluxe rooms which were great with the kids. You guys would love the upstairs Honeymoon suite with the balcony I would bet on it. Great for the money great romantic vibes and you could spend a little extra time in your honeymoon suite, enough said about that. Plus the food at Kuyaba competes in the top of all restaurans in Negril. I personally think the best breakfast in Negril.Staff was great. Small beach but enough room for guests. Won't be dissapointed if you tried it. All the best, enjoy your trip. Dan

Thank you for the information everyone!
Prism - Thanks for sharing that helpful tripadvisor review, that did give me a good idea what the Rustic Cottage is like. It looks a little dark inside there and very basic from the pictures. The description of the lack of water pressure, lack of privacy, thin walls and street noise because it's so close to the road make it sound less romantic, for sure...
The Rustic Cottage might not be the ideal choice for the week of our 10 year anniversary.. The reviewer said he needed earplugs to sleep. Hmmm...
IrieSistah – thank you for all the helpful feedback about your stay there.
The honeymoon suite looks beautiful from the pictures on the website!! $85 is a reasonable price for a room that large, especially if it has a Jacuzzi tub as described on the website. Did you use the Jacuzzi while you were there? Do you have any pictures of the room you could share?
You mentioned the food is amazing, but pricey – can you give an example of what the prices were? (example: around $10, $20, or $30 per meal?)They aren't listed on the website, but the menu looks impressive!
Especially the breakfast. (thanks 1966 Hippy!)
29again – Thanks! you mentioned the beach is small – is it at least a some-what decent stretch? Were you able to get a beach chair? How was the security?
Sorry, I know these are a lot of questions, I really appreciate everyone's help and info about Kuyaba. This is an end of the beach I'm really not familiar with. We have not walked left of the Grand Pineapple on the beach yet. Lol
So you can see we've still got a lot of beach exploring to do!

I've been staying at Kuyaba for many years...starting in the mid 90's when Kuyaba referred to the restaruant and the hotel was Sea Gem. Love that place and the staff. Actually met, and married, my wife at Kuyaba (several years between the two events).
The honeymoon suite is great and it's the room I've stayed in most...something like 15 times. The balcony is the bomb for chilling out. The bathtub is a regular one w/shower head...I believe the jacuzzi ones are only in the king suites. I stayed in a king suite when they first built them along with the delux rooms...there used to be another rustic cottage or two where the block of delux rooms/king suites stand today...a hurricane wiped those out, if I remember correctly. The K-suites are really nice, and newer than the honeymoon suite, but have very small balconies compared to the H-suite.
Kuyaba is on a great section of the beach. Cambio and mini mart a few doors down. Close to town and the west end. Some people complain about the noise when Bourbon Beach (next doot) has late night shows but I love kicking it on the honeymoon suite balcony listening to the music and tree frogs.
The food is fantastic but the $$ can add up if you eat there a lot. I'd say breakfast/lunch average around $8-$12 pp and dinner around $15-$20 pp...more if you want lobster, steak, etc.
I've seen the beach at Kuyaba come and go over the years, to some degree, but I've never been disappointed. We go in May/June and there's always been enough beach to accommodate at least 2-3 rows of beach chairs. Location is great with lots of options for eats, drinks, etc.
Never had a security problem. Rooms have safes and property access is monitored at night.
Hope this helps.
