My first trip the exchange rate was 5 to 1............used to buy beer at Fisherman's Wharf (anyone remember that place?). I also recall seeing women walking street-side with 1 sometimes 2 cases of redstripe on their head....the old rectangular hard cardboard box type. At night I would see some kind of gambling game set up on a little table-top like back gammon....I remember watching it...but was not interested in losing my money.....no idea what it was.

When I first worked in Jamaica the exchange rate was 88 cents Ja for 1 American Dollar. Yes, the Ja Dollar was worth more than the US Dollar.

Most transactions in the hills were still being referred to in Pounds and Shillings.
