Having left the Island in 1986 after living there for 13 years and not returning until 2010 I must say that while there have been many changes things are not that much different.

I've just reread my journal from our first trip back in 2010.

One thing I kept saying was the more things have changed the more they stayed the same

THanks for understanding my post. I love the old Negril, and I will always love Negril. Everything changes. There will always be something that draws us to Negril. From the very firsts time we were lucky enough to have found our favorite vacation spot to today, I will never want to travel anywhere else as long as I have a chance to go to Negril. Negril is not the same, nor am I. I was diagnosed with Parkinson disease in the year 2000 and that will make this trip a challenge, but it will not stop me from going. I am so looking forward to relaxing in the hot sun with a good book. If I can walk the beach, I will, if not, I will get to the places I want to go another way. Life is good, Negril, here we come!

everything is the same in Negril..but different....lol
all those things are still available but progress, tourists, and time just changes the people you are dealing with........
we would just wake people up and ask them to make breakfast for 5 US each, they were more than happy to!........not today. Im sorry to say....the laid back "rural-ness", is fading away as time does.........My main reason for missing the 80's is that was the first time to Jamaica
and I never could fall in love with it as much as I did that time..............

and the money..a guy could just about make a few bucks while you were here back then...not no more........

remember...."The Adventure doesn't end, you just accept it as normal"

My first trip the exchange rate was 5 to 1............used to buy beer at Fisherman's Wharf (anyone remember that place?). I also recall seeing women walking street-side with 1 sometimes 2 cases of redstripe on their head....the old rectangular hard cardboard box type. At night I would see some kind of gambling game set up on a little table-top like back gammon....I remember watching it...but was not interested in losing my money.....no idea what it was.

When I first worked in Jamaica the exchange rate was 88 cents Ja for 1 American Dollar. Yes, the Ja Dollar was worth more than the US Dollar.

Most transactions in the hills were still being referred to in Pounds and Shillings.

What you were watching was a game of "Lude" ( Loo-dee)......its was like a "game of life"...you get busted go to jail, loose a few pennys,
    all done with dice............

Here is a painting we have that depicts the game being played in downtown MoBay, and it was at night when we first saw it........from a distance the sound of the dice hitting the sides of the game-board were like .22 cal shots, that's what brought us over...lol
quite a game, they get very excited......lol

( if no photo shows, its a problem I have been having, msg sent to Rob)

How many of us are the same as we used to be?
I bet we have all changed a bit since we started going to Jamaica.
