Good points T&A. As the Jamaica Tours Board says... public transportation can be an exciting adventure, but only for the intrepid (fearless, brave, courageous) tourist. So if you consider yourself intrepid, enjoy the exciting adventure and for newbies or non-intrepid travelers, charters are A-OK.
kim, you done opened up a whole new can-o-worms.
Route Taxi 101
An Observation
Over the past few years,
in & around Negril
the available route-taxi fleet has improved substantially
...larger vehicles
...more modern vehicles
...air conditioning
...more SUV's & mini-van type vehicles
and the drivers tend not to try to squeeze-in too many passengers, as in the past

We have been trying to keep an eye on that. You should have seen some of the posts that the moderators have had to remove!
It can be a tricky subject at times, and I would think that sometimes a moderator may miss a post - but there is energy being spent in all aspects of the website.
If you feel some posts should be edited or removed, please feel free to drop me an email and let me know!
Thanks!

T&A,
Thank you for your post. Six pages ago, Lisa and I tried to explain that some of the information being presented here was not useful for the majority of visitors to Jamaica.
This board was originally designed with the new visitor in mind. We developed a great following and many people learned much to make their vacations as fun as possible. Around 2005 the board started to have more of cliquish tone, and gradually a few self proclaimed experts began to make the board an "I know more than you know" kind of place. In the past 3 years we have been working on restoring the board to its original focus - to help the visitors to Jamaica, especially those first time visitors have the best time possible. And we want to thank all those who have been helping to make this possible.
This thread went strange early on, drifting a bit back to its old cliquish tone, from the "no thanks is bad" nonsense to the "route taxis are cool" crap. This information is confusing to new visitors, so please folks, remember that you were once a first time visitor.

Just a thought, what if JUTA considered a hop on/hop off type of bus service running from say 9am to an hour past sunset, that anyone could buy a day pass for, with designated stops? The service could run from the AI's at North end of beach to some point on West End Road. Would this free up route taxis, or would this cause revolt from taxi drivers because of lost business?
I have been to dozens of meeting over the last 15 years with various business and government representatives and this issue has been addressed. So far, there have been no workable solutions that can replace the current system.
That's not to say nothing will be done in the future - just nothing in the immediate future...

What monk said.
Respectfully - I for one do not like the tone this thread has taken. All opinions should be respected. I personally think this thread has not been helpful and definatley all possible sides have been shared and should be considered thoughtfully. Sharing information is one thing but please let us be kind to each other. Please.
