    Apartment Needed Feb/March

    Hello,

This is my first post so please excuse me if this question has already been answered. I have found just one other thread on the subject.

In short I am looking to rent a little apartment with a kitchen by the month. I have been to Negril a few times and have looked around on foot but cannot seem to find what I am looking for. I would like the renter to have a website or at least an email address. If they can arrange an airport pick up from MoBay all the better. The cliffs are where I tend to prefer over the beach area.

Another interest I have is learning how to cook jamaican food. If I could combine the two that would be great.

I've read about Jah B's but don't know if the location is good for me.

I live in New York City so I plan to come back if the place works out.

Thank you for reading. I hope to be down there soon.

    Hi Senero

I don't know as much about the cliffs so I will let more knowledgeable boardies give advice on them, Jah B's is across from the beach and it is a nice place. They are rustic but cute and it It is safe. Another on the beach option is Beach Club Condos, They are on the beach and Jean Gaynair is a nice lady to work with.

Per your requests, look at Westender, Judy House

There are a lot of places but many do not have websites and e-mail is hit-and-miss.

Thank you for all your responses. Judy House seems like a decent place but unfortunately they are full. These other places sound great as well but It sounds like I need to be there to handle everything. It is so frustrating. I wish people in JA had more access to computers.

I will continue to look. Please feel free to message me if you or your friends rent.

    Thanks Again.

The Westender is a possibility. They have cabins and rooms with kitchen. See Sweetness's recent posts. She cooked up a storm! http://www.westenderinn.com/

Also, call Blue Horizon West http://www.bluehorizonwest.com/index.html I think they have rooms with kitchens. Very cheap.

Sonero-keep looking. You'll find a place to stay, like I said many hotels have kitchenettes and might be able to accommodate you.

February is a very busy month though so you might run into a lot of sell-out situations. Since you have been here a few times you kind of know the lay of the land. Not every place has a computer or email so you might have to make a few phone calls.

"It is so frustrating. I wish people in JA had more access to computers."
Think about this statement before committing to a two month stay. Remember where you are....the infrastructure is not "first world" and while Negril has developed immensely over the past 10 years Jamaica is still a developing country. Carefully visualize your needs - a two month stay here means scaling down and simplifying. Think about if you'll want/need things like air conditioning, television, internet access etc. What you MIGHT have to do is book for a week somewhere and do some legwork to find your place for the remaining 7 weeks. Truth be told, I think that's the best way to find that "special gem" that won't be advertised on the internet but will be a comfy albeit simple place to hang your hat.

As far as learning to cook Jamaican - I pride myself in being a pretty good Jamaican cook - I love using local and seasonal ingredients, mimicking dishes I've eaten other places, talking with friends and neighbors and using their techniques and ideas. I was just talking to Sue from Judy House as a matter of fact about Jamaican cooking lessons and making that "thing" some day.

So - my suggestion on that front is talk to the veg ladies - pick up say a bag of calalloo and get ideas of what to do with it. Same with Ackee, Dasheen, Pumpkin and Cho Cho. I also have a few Jamaican/Carribean cookbooks that I use to learn about the ingredients and what I can do with them. I've spent the past hree months cooking fused Jamaican food to varying degrees of success (the "everything" chicken was a failed experiment but the steamed fish in coconut milk was a raging success!). If you like to "play" with food as I do you'll enjoy your self-teaching experiment greatly.

Good luck finding a place to be!

Maybe a cottage at the Lighthouse Inn2 might work for you? Email them and ask about monthly rates. Inge and Penny are very helpful and as far as I know, Penny does airport transfers for guests.

Also you can check them out via the webcast on Sundays (www.realnegril.com)!
