The Jamaican Railway Corporation did some refurbishings in 2011 and actually did run the train from MayPen to Spanish Town – here is a video link to the April 2011 inaugural run. It appears that the JRC (controlled by the JA Govt) is seeking to either privitize the railway or seek international joint venture investors.

I rode on the original train in the mid 1980’s ….. departed MoBay in the morning and arrived in downtown Kingston in the afternoon. It was an interesting experience – quite a few vendors boarded in MoBay with drinks, food, etc and went as far as the midway point where they disembarked and took the afternoon train back to MoBay (and the same was true in reverse for the train from Kingston to MoBay). And as Rambo noted, there were businesses at the midpoint that sold many things (including custom made clothing to measurement).
