Most on here avoid all inclusive resorts and stay at the non AI hotels. As for calling home, many hotels and/or drivers you would hire to transport you to/from airport and your hotel will loan you a phone and all you need to do is top it with minutes. You may need to give a small deposit. You can also purchase a phone with minutes in town.
