This past July we drove from Kingston to Negril along the south coast, and I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is new to driving in Jamaica. I have driven from MoBay to Portland round trip once and from Kingston to Portland round trip. And, on our last trip from MoBay to Portland then to Kingston, and then on to Negril via the south coast which was the worst leg to drive. From Mandeville to Negril is riddled with potholes and quite a bit of truck traffic on two lane road that at times seemed quite small for it to be the main road.

The next time we drive from Kingston to Negril, we will probably try the A1 through Bog walk and then across the north coast. The whole north coast road from Negril to Port Antonio is in excellent shape and an easy drive for the beginner. And, it's really hard to forget to stay on the left when your driving on the "wrong" side of the car. The only time I got mixed up was in Port Antonio and there were a bunch of cars parked on the right side of the road facing the same way I was going.
