Does anyone know if a Tracfone will work on the island (one from the states)?

I doubt it; my Virgin Mobile phone does not work there.
Nope! Wish it did, for I am ole school and hate any kind of contract. Funny that one can call Japan from a tracfone but not Jamaica. My friends can text me, or call me on my tracfone, yet I cannot call them back or text them.....gotta use my husband's phone with an international contract. Generally, we always rent a digicel while in Negril. Much cheaper and dependable.
It is possible to get a phone that will work in Jamaica. I had an AT&T pay as you go phone but that one would only work with Claro or Lime. I have a NOKIA that I had obtained elsewhere and when I came to JA, I bought a Digicel chip and it works. I think the frequency is 1800/1900. Whatever most quad band phones will work. Have had the same JA phone number for YEARS. I do regular monthly top ups on line to keep it active.
Check out www.digiceljamaica.com for more information. Good luck. Actually, if you want you can buy a Digicel phone & chip for about $3500 JA and keep it for repeat trips. There is a Digicel store on the ground floor next to the pharmacy by Burger King. You will save the price of a rental in no time at all.

My tracfone always worked but when u get home they will shut you off.....
My Tracfone has never worked in Jamaica--it searches for service and then shows no signal
not suppose to use a Tracfone in Jamaica if you read their user agreement blip........
if you do then you loose your service with them.......and all minutes lost on the phone........
you should only be using a Jamaican cellie in Jamaica.......
all Foreign phones are way too expensive to use there......
sure you can change out a sim card in some cell phones and all that chit for Jamaica but why bother........

Thanks again to all for helpful answers to my question. It was interesting about the service being discontinued if you use it in Jamaica. Guess I will take it but have it turned off in Jamaica.

If you travel internationally a lot, these are a good option, as you can buy a sim for specific countries. They come with a UK sim (can be expensive to use in some countries) but are unlocked phones, allowing other sim cards. Prices start at $29 http://www.mobal.com/international-cell-phones/
It is not the cell phone that matters so much but the chip. I have one phone that I can use in different countries, just switch the chip when I get there. I would never use a US carrier in JA for anything but a true emergency! And @ $1.69 usd & up per minute, it can quickly become a very expensive emergency...
