My next reach will be AI. The girl wants to check out SATP. Economically it is less expensive...even when considering drinks/food on the beach/Westend.
I'm gonna check out prices of flights out of Buffalo to compare vs. Toronto packages.

Yes, you make a good point ... but it is a shame when people don't venture out to see the country they are in. Especially when it is because the AI may have promoted a negative view point to discourage folks from venturing off the property at will... Maybe that is what really bothers me. But hey, however you go, ENJOY!

Some people just aren't as adventerous as you are. For some, their idea of a great vacation is just relaxing on a very nice beach with their significant other, eating good food, leaving their wallet in their room and an endless supply of drinks. Nothing wrong with that..
That's how i feel! i can't understand why someone would spend hundred..thousands... of dollars to sit on a hotel property for a week.. and not even step outside the gates once to explore the country they are visiting.. for that i could drive down to the beach here and it would be a lot cheaper. i think half the fun of travelling is exploring unknown territory and meeting strangers.. IMO its a waste to visit a country and just stay in the AI resorts...might as well have taken a week off of work and stayed home.
I don't know where you live, but there are no beaches as nice as Negril where I live.....and while you might see it as a "waste", there are many who travel to Negril STRICTLY for some beach time. They don't feel the need or the urge to leave the resort and explore. Some have "been there and done that" with the exploring, some others are just looking to recharge their battery by sitting on a lounger and swimming in the beautiful waters....and yes, are willing to spend hundreds....or even thousands for that experience.
To each their own.
tfw73 ...I must say for us, that after 2 cruises(our 1st, and 2nd)in the last 2 years....there IS a wrong way to travel for us, and that is a cruise!!! The idea that all your meals are covered(although drinks are NOT, and rival the prices of a big city nightclub)...and...that you can do/see 2-4 different places in a week SOUNDS great....but 7-8 hours to experience a country, it's people and culture is horse dung!.....after 7 trips to Jamaica(mostly all AI I admit, but we are weening off them), it IRKS me when someone in a Jamaica T-shirt gets my interest to ask "Where did you stay?", and it's "Oh, we went on a cruise there last year" Cruises are cheap, though ..if you can keep from spending 2-3X what you bought it for ON the trip
I agree about the cruises....it would kill me to pull into somewhere and fall in love with the place and only be able to stay eight hours! Or, the faux AI thing, not everything is covered, whattttt? That would suck. I've never done a cruise and never will. I have a FB friend who said she was going to JA also after I posted I was returning. I asked her where and she said a cruise that was stopping in Montego Bay. But hey, there are folks who REALLY love cruises and that is ok. It's not for me, but for some people it is exactly what they like, just like the land AI resorts.
Sweetsue, the resorts that promote a negative reputation of the very location they are in are shooting themselves in the foot. I love to explore whatever area I am in but I know others don't feel the same way. I have a serious case of wanderlust lol.

I love to cruise! We've done it twice, but we do it our own way. We enjoy the ship, the free day care and the free room service! Our last cruise we got off the boat twice, MBJ, spent the day with Rocky in Negril and at Cozumel, just to stretch our legs. I am not a fan of Mexico, at all, could care less. The boat empties on port days and e have it to ourselves. The kids love cruising too! I admit I didn't like our first cruise, but I relaxed and embraced it the second time. Enjoyed it for what it is, not what it could be, if that makes sense. For me it's like staying in a fancy moving hotel. I'd love to hit the Bahamas on a cruise and we have some friends trying to talk us I to a Disney cruise. We'd totally go for our 4 year olds sake. Vacation is Vacation in my book!
Awaiting our return to Negril, 07/01/12
I guess we have always been either lucky or smart.Nobody ever said to us at an AI or not, to not venture off the resort. Sure they have tried to get us to use their drivers, but nothing a no thanks and a short walk didn't take care of. Here comes my can of worms....*winces* If people go to Jamaica and stay at their resort OR if they go and stay at a non AI, or they go and camp on the island, who cares?! I have always wondered why people are criticized for where they stay. It's their money, their vacation, and we should let it be...not criticize or talk about them having less of an experience, after all, depending upon the reach and the reason for it, maybe that isn't their reason for going.
