Has anyone used the Digicel on the go modem?

I was looking on Digicel's site and noticed they have an on the go modem you can use in 4G areas and was thinking this might be ideal for my laptop to get Wifi while in the room, or on the patio.

Looks like you buy the modem then you can pay by the day or get a monthly plan for the 4G service. Just wondering if the connection is halfway decent. Thanks in advance!

The modem works fine, but only in areas with strong reception. If you are near the edge of the reception area, you may not get a connection.

But for most places in Negril, this is not a problem.

I plan to use this during my summer trip since the Beach Club no longer has free wi-fi. I could use the NBCC's wi-fi but don't want to sit outside early in the a.m. & be mosquito food. I'm looking forward to getting this & being able to use my netbook in my room or on the balcony whenever I want.

I spent Nov. 2011 through Jan. 2012 mostly at my house in Accompong Town using the CLARO 3g thumbdrive Internet connection and was generally very pleased with the performance considering the remoteness in the Cockpits.

Now, I am readying for my return in a couple of months. What would you or anyone recommend for me to get that would at least offer that level of service (or hopefully) exceed that product? Does Digicel offer that 3g equivalent or someone else that could be recommended? How about 4g? I am concerned that 4g would not connect in my remote area.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Accompong,

Digicel bought Claro - so they are now providing the same type service that Claro did. One word of advice - if your Claro modem worked good - DO NOT LET DIGI REPLACE IT - have them unlock it and then use the new SIM (Digicel, not Claro's old SIM) to login using the same Claro software.

There is a very minimal setting change that needs to be done - but that is a non-issue. If they cant provide you with the new settings for the old Claro modem, I have them...

Thanks Rob. I was sort of thinking along those lines. I left my thumbdrive in Accompong and will be returning sometime around September. I will be sure to come pay my repects to you, bnewb and the whole Seastar crew for a Saturday Web Cast once I get settled.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.
