    Question Hamburger Meat

Can hamburger meat be found at Mobay or Negril grocery stores?

Yes, you can find hamburger meat in Mobay or Negril but it might not taste exactly like the meat you buy at home but for a good reason. Cattle are not pumped full of bulk-building steriods and are generally range-fed instead of a heavy diet of straw and hay.

You will find that Jamaicans generally do not eat much beef anyways. Of course you can always go to Burger King and satisfy your urges.

Yes you can buy it at the HiLo. Its much drier than what we are use to so added some grated cheese to the mix before frying up some patties

    Re: Hamburger Meat

Thanks guys -- I'm staying 2 weeks in June at Summerset Village and plan on cooking while there, using the hamburger meat in dishes instead of burgers, so the taste difference shouldn't be noticed. I've ate at Burger King before, and the burgers there simply do NOT taste like those here at the BK in the States. Would it be worth my time to stop at the big grocery store in MoBay or just shop the HiLo? Thanks again

You can shop the big stores in Mobay or Mega Mart, but if you plan on buying meat bring one of those hot/cold bags to store it in. As far as beef for burgers even, the minced meat in Hilo makes a pretty good burger especially if you have not had one for a while, I ususally get regular mince, but the other day I tried the ground round, and it actually had a better flavor than the regular. You could also get chuck or any other beef roast and request that they grind it for you. Hilo also has a minced chicken that does pretty good alone or in a dish, I've used it for meatloaf, spagetti, pizza, etc.after being here for two weeks it all tastes good. And me, I have never been desperate enough to eat at a BK in the states or here.

HiLo sometimes has a lot of hard to find staples from home. After all most things are imported. Also if you eat chicken the butcher shop across from the fire station is much more economical than HiLo, and they do good bussiness so a great turnover of products. They also have beef, pork, fish, all sold in bulk or pounds, note the fish is frozen however, not fresh. For fresh fish try the Fisherman's beach in back of the Craft Market, down near BK

the normal ground beef is so lean, it lacks flavor,a mix of roast and hamburger meat adds flavor and will help it keep together while cooking.......

I got boneless chuck from HILo, froze it, sliced it and ground it in the blender. I was able to get the grind that i liked and knew what was in my burger. grilled it slowly and was pleased. I am not fond of the steak there but it would probably make a good burger also.
