Best credit card to earn travel credits?

Hello Negril peeps -

I travel from Maryland to Jamaica on AirTran. I am just wondering....can anyone recommend a credit card that earns points on flights?

Hi FeelinIrie (love that name) - I will be of no help at all but couldn't help but post. I personally do not believe that credit cards are ever a good idea - same with financing unless absolutely necessary. I use only a debit card and it earns points although not much. I think you can find good travel deals in many other ways but having to spend money that is highly service charged and interest charged is not a good plan. But I digress.......I know many people have them but I also have heard of more people using frequent flyer miles with free programs of individual airlones and hotel chains that pay off big after time.

AirTran Visa card from Barclay Bank gives points toward flights ........... also 2 - $50 vouchers on anniversary date ......... does have a $49 per year charge after 1 st year free ............ has a sign up bonus that varies depending on what special is being run at that time ................ most of the time you get a free round trip ticket just for signing up .................. BUT not sure what is going to happen with the proposed Southwest merger/takeover

CapitalOne Venture card earns 2 points/$1 spent on anything. Take your point total and devide by 100 to get the dollars available to spend on travel or ? Put all your expenses on the card that you pay every month and pay it in ful every month. You'll soon be racking up points to convert to airfares to MBJ!

We have found that the best for no-hassle travel is the Rapid Rewards Southwest airlines card for domestic travel as far as all flights are open to you and the points never expire. You can also exchange them for AirTran points which would enable you to fly to Jamaica. They also give you a free flight for signing up.

I have both a Continental and United card that have paid for several first class upgrades and or free tickets. It is a good value IF you are disciplined. I use my cards for everything and pay them off, so I am only socked with the annual fee. Since United and Continental merged I now only belong to the United program, however my Continental card still earns me points into the United program. They gave me 25000 miles after my first purchase and give me upgrade vouchers for domestic travel. They also gave me club passes this year, so the annual fee is trivial.

If you always travel with the same airline, that might be the way to go because you usually get additional perks in addition to miles, like early boarding, club passes, etc. We always fly US Airways to Jamaica, so I went with a US Airways World Mastercard and use it to buy things I normally buy so I pay it off every month and never carry a balance. I figure the annual fee in to my Jamaica expenses, so I just see it as getting really cheap flights by the time I pay the taxes and fees.
